United Counties League history 1934-1970 - saved

Originally known as the Northamptonshire League, from the time of its foundation in 1895, the combination became the United Counties League in 1934. For a long time no trace of the league’s tables from before the Second World War proved possible. Thanks to Paul Stone, however, the site now has the five pre-war tables and this will allow a full run from the UCL’s first season up to the present, once the necessary ‘rewrite’ has been completed.

Two seasons ‘caused problems’ until October 2012, when, thanks to John Stevenson, a final table for the 1955-1956 campaign has been added, together with goals details for the 1968-1969 season.

Wisbech Town left to join the Eastern Counties League, while Brush Sports Reserves and Rugby Town also departed. No new clubs were admitted. The March Town club changed its name to March Town United.

The United Counties League went through major changes in the next 8 years. A number of

its clubs left the competition and between the end of the 1954-1955 season and the start

of the 1956-1957 campaign, the league took on a wholly different nature. This was a real

period of change for the league.

Where an asterisk appears at the end of a team’s name, it means that this was the club’s

reserve side.

There is no record of the outstanding fixture between the top two clubs being played. Almost half the teams left at the end of the season – Biggleswade Town, Holbeach United, Spalding United, Stamford and the reserve sides of Bedford Town, King’s Lynn and Wisbech Town.  The competition was joined by Rothwell Town.

1955-1956

For a long time the 1955-1956 season presented a bit of a mystery, with no final table traced for the United Counties League.  In October 2012, however, John Stevenson provided the ‘missing’ details for inclusion on the site.  Many thanks, John.

Eynesbury Rovers Reserves left the competition. Dunstable Town Reserves and Shefford Town joined the United Counties League.

The next few years saw massive changes take place in the United Counties League in terms of membership. The period after that was more stable, but changes continued to take place in terms of which clubs were playing in the competition. One mystery remains which rather spoils the record for these years. The goals records for the 1968-1969 season have yet to be traced, so the table for that season has been put on site with two blank columns. Hopefully, the goals information will surface in due course.

Where an asterisk appears at the end of a team’s name, it continues to mean that this was the club’s reserve side.
