Lancashire Combination history 1891-1909 - saved

Lancashire provided half the clubs for the first Football League season (1888-1889) and the county was a hotbed of the non-league game in the early days of ‘organised’ soccer. In 1889 the Lancashire League was set up by the top sides outside the senior competition and it was from here that Blackpool, Bury and Liverpool all made their way into the higher reaches of English football. The Lancashire League insisted from the outset that it would not take in Football League reserve sides and this created a problem as the top clubs in the county had increasing difficulty finding regular, high quality opposition for their second XIs. It was this that led to the establishment of the Lancashire Combination in 1891.

Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End (winners of the Football League in its opening two seasons) joined with six non-league sides from Lancashire to create the new competition. The first season was not an outstanding success, and the league, which took time to root and grow, had a few administrative problems in its early years, as mismatches in its records show. However, by the turn of the century the Lancashire Combination was a settled competition, with 18 clubs kicking off the 1900-1901 season. When the Lancashire League folded in 1903, most of its members joined the Lancashire Combination, which was now the undisputedly top league in the county.

Halliwell failed to fulfil their fixtures. The club was expelled from the league and its record deleted.  One of the games between Preston North End Reserves and Skelmersdale United was unplayed. Hindley and Stanley (Liverpool) left the competition at the end of the season. Ardwick Reserves, Darwen Reserves, Newton Heath Reserves, Tranmere Rovers and Turton all joined the league.

1893-1894

  1. BLACKBURN ROVERS RESERVES       16  13   2   1  62  13  28

  (140 61 16 63 367 369 138)

Royton failed to fulfil their fixtures and were expelled from the league with their record deleted. The games between Darwen Reserves and Lostock Hall were both cancelled, though the reason for this is unclear. The wins and losses totals do not match. Lostock Hall and Tranmere Rovers left the competition. Bell’s Temperance, Burnley Reserves, Everton Reserves, Oswaldtwistle Rovers, Padiham and Rawtenstall all joined the league. Ardwick became Manchester City.

The Lancashire Combination continued to be dominated by Football league reserve teams in these years, but the size of the competition grew. A number of the non-league clubs entering the league early in this period did not survive for long, but the competition outlasted its rival, the Lancashire League, which folded in 1903, with some of its members transferring to the Lancashire Combination.  Unfortunately, there are a number of errors in the figures given in some of the Final Tables because records were not always kept accurately. Rather than delay ‘publication’ while things are being checked out, it has been decided to put ‘the latest information’ onto the site.

Heywood United and Trawden Forest left the Lancashire Combination at the end of the season. The competition increased dramatically in size, thanks mainly to the demise of the Lancashire League, 10 of that league’s 12 members moving to join the Lancashire Combination. A further 10 clubs were also admitted, with two equal divisions of 18 being settled on. Colne and Darwen joined the 16 remaining Lancashire Combination clubs in the new Division 1, with all other new entrants forming Division 2.

*Rochdale Town folded after 14 games (6 points) and their fixtures and record were taken on by

Atherton Church House.

At the end of the season the top six sides in Division 2 were promoted, though Stockport County’s first team replaced its reserve side. The bottom six clubs in Division 1 were relegated, which could explain why Black Lane Temperance and Heywood now disappeared from the competition. Clitheroe Central and Chorley St. George’s also departed. Blackpool Reserves, Lytham, Oldham Athletic and Workington were admitted to Division 2, meaning both sections continued with 18 clubs each.

The Lancashire Combination ran two divisions throughout this period, towards the end of which there was a major change in the nature of the competition.
