Delphian League history 1951-1963 - re-saved

The creation of the Delphian League in 1951 added another tier of sorts to amateur football in the South-East, fitting in below the Corinthian League in the rankings. A number of the competition’s better sides moved to the Corinthian League over the next few years and, when the merger of these two leagues with the Athenian League took place in 1963, the Delphian clubs slotted in as the lowest of the three sections. The standard of football played, however, was higher than the latter comment might suggest and the membership included some well-known future names.

As a result of the severe weather during the 1962-63 winter there had been so many fixture postponements that the League Management decided to suspend/abandon the main competition. Instead, an ‘Emergency Competition’ was introduced, with the clubs divided into two groups, on an east-West basis. Each team played the rest of the clubs in its group once, with the two sides finishing top of the sections playing a two-leg final to decided the ‘championship’.

In the play-off to decide who would be the Delphian League’s last champions before the merger with the Corinthian and Athenian Leagues, Hertford Town and Edmonton drew the first leg 1-1. The second leg also ended in a draw after 90 minutes, so extra time was played. Edmonton proved to be the stronger, winning 4-1 and 5-2 on aggregate.  Delphian League clubs joined Division 2 of the expanded Athenian League.
