Aetolian League and Seanglian League - their short histories re-saved

1959-1960

The expansion of the Southern League to two divisions in 1958 created problems for other competitions. This did not always have an immediate effect, but ‘the writing was on the wall’ for the Kent League and eight of its clubs departed in 1959. This, of course, was bound to have consequences and the remaining Kent League clubs, seeking to ensure a decent standard of competition, were prime movers in the creation of two new competitions – the Aetolian League and Seanglian League. This meant an end for the Kent League.

Seven Kent League clubs went into the Aetolian League, along with four sides from the London League and three others – Charlton Athletic ‘A’, Crockenhill and Ford United (previously Briggs Sports). A 2nd Division, made up of Medway Corinthians and 11 reserve sides, mostly of Division 1 teams, was also created.

Ten Kent League teams joined the Seanglian League. Also entering this competition were the reserve sides of Bexleyheath & Welling and Yiewley and the ‘A’ teams of Brentford, Crystal Palace and Queen’s Park Rangers.

Neither of the competitions lasted very long, with the Seanglian League disappearing in 1963 and the Aetolian League merging with the London League a year later. The Aetolian League ran two divisions in these years, though the vast majority of the lower section were the reserve sides of clubs in Division 1 and there was never any question of promotion and relegation being introduced. The competition was reasonably stable, even though there were changes to the constitution each year during the league’s short life. When the Aetolian League closed, ten of the Division 1 clubs took part in the merger, while Chatham Town moved to the Metropolitan League and Herne Bay joined the Athenian League. Orpington Athletic, the only first team in Division 2, switched to the Parthenon League. The Seanglian League was largely a competition for reserve teams of semi-professional clubs, mixed with a smattering of ‘A’ teams of London- or Kent-based Football League sides. The loss of five members in 1961 reduced the competition from 17 clubs to 12 and the ravages of the 1962-63 winter undermined much of what confidence was left.
