Northern Alliance history 1890-1976 - re-saved, but still with gaps

Welcome to the ‘Northern Alliance History section’. This page provides a list of the league’s champions from 1891 onwards, with runners-up named where this information has been unearthed. The page also includes tables from the early days of the competition, insofar as these are known.

There is an ‘air of mystery’ surrounding the Northern Alliance during its early years. The best research carried out on events has been done by Jarrow-born Patrick Brennan. Without the work of Mr. Brennan, there would be no easily accessible record of how things finished in the league in those early days, beyond a list of past Northern Alliance champions, which can be found in a number of locations.

Most of what has been unearthed has come from leading Newcastle newspapers from the time. Unfortunately, there are gaps, with no tables for the first two seasons. Also, the tables for the first 10 seasons all contain inaccuracies and there is even some uncertainty about some of the names that teams played under.

Most mysterious of all is the 1892-93 season. In all lists of champions of the Northern Alliance, Shankhouse are named as league winners. A league table published in a newspaper from mid-April 1893 calls this into question, but, given the lack of accuracy with all other league tables, it seems possible that this record may be wrong also.

1892-3

Northern Alliance table at mid-April 1893. The figures in the table do not balance, but the biggest problem is that, if this record is correct in terms of positions, games played and points awarded, it seems impossible for Shankhouse to have completed the season as champions.

There are one or two gaps in the story in this section, but those years which are covered are thanks to the work of Patrick Brennan, who, while carrying out research into Jarrow FC and South Shields, in the club’s pre-Football league days, has unearthed a mass of detail about the Northern Alliance.

1901-1902

The last league table traced comes from the main Newcastle newspapers for April 26th, 1902. There were 11 matches still left to play at that stage and the results of these are unknown. It would appear, however, that the positions at the top and bottom of the Northern Alliance were not affected.

The Jarrow v. Shankhouse fixture was not completed. The Consett and Dudley clubs were both re-elected and it appears that North Shields Athletic were admitted to the competition.

Unfortunately, the 1904-1905 table has yet to ‘come to light’, so it is impossible to be certain about very much for the campaign, except that Willington Athletic emerged as champions.

One of the matches involving Birtley and Mickley was left unplayed.

1914-1915

It is unknown how many clubs started the season, which ended with 3 games unplayed. The Great War disrupted football throughout the country and the Northern Alliance ceased operating in 1915.

At this point there is a gap in the history of the Northern Alliance as the final tables for seasons 1922-1923 to 1924-1925 have yet to surface. The next available information is therefore for the 1925-1926 campaign, which ended with the league merging with the North Eastern League as that competition’s 2nd Division.

The 18 Northern Alliance clubs, including the newly-elected Dipton and Seaham Harbour clubs, now joined the North-Eastern League as its second division. Mr. T.W. Bell was in the chair at the final meeting of the Alliance, which was held in Newcastle. Mr. J.W. March, the secretary, in his report stated:- "You have decided to alter your constitution, and I trust that it will be for the betterment of football generally in the district. Most senior leagues have come to realise that by joining forces and providing facilities for conducting the ever-growing business of organisation better results can be obtained than any official, however enthusiastic he may be, can provide in his own home."

The 32nd Annual report referred to the season as one of the most successful in the history of the Alliance. Mr. J. Norton, the hon. treasurer, presented a statement which showed a balance of £42 7s 6d on the general account and £92 13s 1d on the Challenge Cup account. Four of the management committee of eight, Mr. Bell, Mr. J. Norton, Mr. J. Stainthorpe and Mr. Chris Bell were elected to the management committee of the North-Eastern League.

For seasons 1926-1927 to 1934-1935 there was no separate Northern Alliance.  What happened to the ‘Alliance clubs’ 1926-1935 can be found on the North Eastern League pages.

From 1935 the Northern Alliance ran as an independent, single-section competition, up to and in the years after the Second World War.  The first few years of this period are covered below, but in 1948 the record comes to a halt.  For almost a quarter of a century no surviving record has yet been unearthed – and the details of what happened in the 1970s remain ‘patchy’.  If anyone has any of the missing information, please get in touch with the site and help fill the gaps.

*Newcastle United ‘A’ defeated East Cramlington Black Watch 3-1 in the Championship Play-Off.

The next few years

At its AGM following the completion of the 1939-40 season the Northern Alliance was unable to reach a decision on whether to continue during the forthcoming season, and the meeting was adjourned. The meeting was reconvened in the County Hotel, Newcastle on 10th August 1940. Having considered representations from clubs that they were unable to guarantee being able to raise a team it was decided, "that the Northern Football Alliance should suspend its operations during hostilities". All clubs currently in membership would retain their membership, and would be deemed full members "should they so desire whenever we again function". Deposits would be returned to clubs if they desired, upon application.

On 24th May 1946 a meeting was held at the County Hotel, Newcastle with the object of reviving the Northern Alliance. It was attended by 8 clubs who had formerly been members - Alnwick, Amble, Ashington, Newbiggin CW, Cramlington Welfare, Morpeth Town, Newburn and North Shields, together with a number of clubs who wished to apply for membership - Prudhoe East Park, Jarrow, Seaton Burn Welfare, Gosforth and Coxlodge, Shilbottle CW and Blyth Spartans. Lynemouth had also applied but did not attend the meeting. It was agreed to reform the league, and all applicants were accepted into membership.
