I think this might be a bit of a long shot, but does anyone have the tables for seasons 1898/99 to 1904/05 inclusive? This is the league Sutton United played in also the Herald League 1898/99 and the Clapham League 1904/05.
Many thanks.

Sutton finished top of group or section or division 3 in 1902-1903 but were beaten in the play-offs

They then got transferred to group/division 2 for the above 1903-1904 season.

My understanding is that Sutton were founder members and maybe they were in division 3 from then until 1902-1903. Tooting Graveney were in division 3 for four seasons being 02-03 to 05-06 and only played Sutton in the 02-03 season.

In 04-05 Sutton were in division 4 along with Croydon Common and others but not in 05-06 which I think tallys with above.

Table below is NOT complete but it does give the constitution which I believe is correct.

The results are for Tooting Graveney.

Many thanks to you also. Detailed information. I did not have any info for this league. I had Sutton United in the Clapham League for season 1904/05. So they must have been in both..

It was formed in 1898-99 by absorbing WEST SURREY, EAST & WEST SURREY and MID-SURREY Leagues, whilst it was absorbed itself by SURREY INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE after 1935-36 season. (see List of Leagues sticky in History section).

Redhill, Woking, Addlestone and more, were still playing in the East & West Surrey League until at least the end of 1903/04.

So were Leatherhead. They left to join the Mid Surrey League in 1904 which was a more senior league

The Surrey Junior League was formed in 1898 but this formation was not connected with any of the other leagues mentioned.

The West Surrey League formed in 1891 and in 1898 changed its title to East and West Surrey League. In 1905, the name reverted back to West Surrey League and the competition ran up to 1914. It does not appear to have reformed after the Great War.

The Mid-Surrey League was formed in 1901 and closed in 1910.

I assume the title change in 98 with the admission of Kingston and Dorking rejoining that season. I have seen the early seasons of the league listed as both East and West Surrey and just West Surrey. During the first few seasons the league was split between Guilford and Dorking divisions. Would this have been the confusion between the league names?

The Mid-Surrey league started in 1901-02 but was never completed that season. It continued that next season but disbanded in 1903-04 only to reform under the same name drawing clubs from the Surrey Junior League, the East & West Surrey League and the South Suburban League.

'Sporting Life' of 4 April 1898 reports on a meeting of the Surrey F.A., at which it is stated 'the extension of the West Surrey League was granted, and its title changed to East and West Surrey League, with a radius of 20 miles from Guildford'.

During my research, I never saw the league referred to in the press as anything other than the West Surrey prior to 1898, even when it had the two sections.

'Surrey Times' of 2 September 1905 notes that 'East' in the league title has been dropped 'at the request of the Surrey F.A.'

Thanks for the extra info on the Mid Surrey League, I wasn't aware of the closure and reformation - do you by any chance have any tables for this league?

The East was added to The West Surrey League when Redhill joined.

The 1904 Mid-Surrey League was originally constituted as the "Mid and East Surrey League", and it was this new league that requested the old league drop the "East". They then changed their own name to the "Mid-Surrey League" before the competition was ratified by the F.A.
