The penalty applies next season because the EFL haven't the bottle to apply it to this season despite the offence happening last season. They also probably know that neither Charlton or Wigan have the money to take them on. Expect Derby's penalty, if indeed there is one, to be applied to this season because it would not impact them at all.

I think the panel will apply any Derby penaty to next season as well, I don't believe it would be that blatently inconsistent not to.It is the panel that decides this not the EFL.

The FFP offense occurred in the 3-year period to 2018 and did not include 18/19, Weds were not charged until the 19/20 season was underway. Yes, it all takes too long - and there may yet be an appeal - but the exact set of teams Weds cheated is not the same as those in the CH in 19/20 or 20/21 so it's always going to be pretty random timing of when the penalty is applied. It will still hurt Weds.

Derby aren’t charged with the same issues as Wednesday. Wednesday lied about their accounts. Derby are accused of selling pride Park at an exaggerated amount to Mel Morris the owner. The EFL signed all this off & were happy about it, until a few teams kicked off.

It’s hard not to find all this highly amusing. Yes, Leicester have thrown away a Champions League place, but the ‘worst case scenario’ is fifth in the PL. With Forest bottling the playoffs and Derby almost certainly starting next season with a large points deduction, oh what a time to be wearing blue in the East Midlands!

Some would say Leicester dodged the bullet though after exceeding the £8 million FFP spending limit and making a £3.1 million settlement for the Championship winning campaign in 2014.

It's very similar - Weds 'sold' their stadium to the owner and backdated the 'sale' in their accounts so that they wouldn't fall foul of FFP! And both cases were referred to an independent panel.

We never backdated the accounts. That’s cooking the books

Maybe not but for the same 3-year period as Weds you 'sold' the stadium (for a ridiculously inflated price) to the club owner otherwise you would be in breach of FFP regulations. No wonder other clubs cried foul. You may get away with having exploited a loophole however. There's no Pride in that.

The EFL signed it off. This is why Mel thinks he’s done nothing wrong. Why didn’t the EFL pull us up at the time?

Why did the EFL approve the Wigan takeover ? Perhaps they don't bother to check anything....?

I guess the lesson in there is; if you’re going to cheat, make sure you win.

Charlton, Sheffield Wednesday,Derby, Wigan, Barnsley, Macclesfield, Stevenage all unclear as to their fate and the original Bury still floating around looking for a home. Been a bit of a confused ending to the EFL season.
