The US Senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, giving the US control of much of what is now central USA, (but of course, ignoring the people who lived there).

A convention signed between USA and the UK in 1818 fixed the border between the USA and Canada, and hence transferred a small area from the Louisiana Purchase to Canada

Division Three, Plough Lane, Wimbledon

We had made a bad start to the season after promotion and the game before we had finally scraped a 1-0 home win over fellow strugglers Chester with a Paul Lazarus goal and three days later this midweek home game against Plymouth who were also down the bottom end of the table presented a good chance to move up the table. Central defender Steve Jones got an injury in this game and midfielder Steve Galliers was making his last appearance before a £70,000 move to Crystal Palace so the rats were deserting the sinking ship. The game was goalless until Francis Joseph put us 1-0 up with 10 minutes left, Colin Randell equalised on 85 minutes but with the last kick of the match Welsh international Terry Boyle, on loan from Palace, hooked in the winner to give us a very welcome second win in a row.

2015 Accrington Stanley 3 AFC Wimbledon 4 crowd 1,315
League Two, Crown Ground, Accrington

The previous weekend we had lost 5-2 at home to Morecambe and when went 2-0 down after 10 minutes to two goals from Billy Kee the knives were being sharpened for manager Neil Ardley, in fact my brother expressed the opinion that the two clubs would be in different divisions following year, he was right but it was us who ended up getting promotion. We had lost on all four visits to Accrington before so we had nothing to lose and plenty of time to get back in the game and scored twice in six minutes to equalise with Danny Bulman(19)and Lyle Taylor(25)firing home. Normal service was resumed when Sean McConville made it 3-2 to the home side after 36 minutes but just before the break Bulman made it 3-3. In the second half there was only one more goal and it came to us on 64 minutes with the best goal of the game from Lyle Taylor, and thereafter we held on more comfortably than expected having finally laid the hoodoo to rest. I stayed overnight at the Premier Inn in Preston and still had a smile on my face the next morning, we only had about 130 fans there but it was a memorable night for all of them.

Stalemate at the Giant Axe as the Cheshire League visitors defended well and looked dangerous on the break. They won the replay too.

1980 LD3 1930 Brentford 3 Gillingham 3 6790
Good stuff at Griffin Park, the Bees were well on top for the first 40 mins and led through Crown and Hurlock. Price pulled one back for the Gills before half time and got what proved to be the equaliser as they were much better after the break.

1984 Gola-L 1500 Wealdstone 3 Worcester C. 3 761
Top v third, very windy, and an entertaining game as visitors deserved their point. It was 2-2 at half time, or, more correctly, A.Cordice 2 v Moss 2, with the former going on to complete his hat-trick but the latter leaving Wright to grab the equaliser.

2012 HPFL 1500 Uni. Portsmouth 4 Paulsgrove 1 7
Once the home team got into their stride they dominated this game against high-flying Grove. Two up at half time, the hosts were briefly pegged back by their opponents after the break but scored two more to record a clear victory. Portou was the outstanding player for the home side, and scored two of the goals. Despite this performance, the Uni finished bottom at the end of the season (thanks to points deductions as they found it hard to get a team out at times) and did not appear in the league the next season.

2018 FAC4Q 1500 Eastleigh 0 Hampton & R B. 1 740
Awful performance by the home side as they crashed out of the Cup to opponents a league below them. A decent start by the hosts quickly petered out and the more the game went on the more the visitors realised they could win it. Finally, in the 85th minute, Dickson got the winner, and booked a home game against Oldham Athletic, which would have been nice on TV at the Silverlake too, if the hosts had bothered to go for it.

Weekend jaunt to Moldova leaving Sat at 00-20 ex Luton with Wizz W6 3798 , arrival time in Chisinau at 05-45. Always early when you could do with it being late for 2 reasons , time to kill and money/vouchers back  . Had a coffee to kill time.

Car pick up was 08-00 , I think there was a small fee for taking car into Transnistria . So on our way about 08-30 straight to our hotel for the one night , the Cosmos Hotel, more up market than I usually book but over here it's silly cheap. Approx £30 for a twin en suit breakfast inc.
Arrived at hotel about 09-15 and asked if we could dump our bags until arriving back in the evening , no problems. Unfortunately they were busy and didn't have a suitable room for us till later on but we weren't expecting that . Anyway the friendly receptionist gave us 2 vouchers for a breakfast at the hotel , that was nice . A big buffet breakfast to set us up for the day.

Won't talk much about Transnistia it's been covered many times on here , that's where our first game was at Dinamo Auto.
It was about a 75 min drive to Dinamo Auto , so we took a very slow drive and still arrived about 13-00 for a 15-00 kick off. Nothing at / near ground so back into Tiraspol and a nice bar for an hour , time for me to have a couple.

Game was dire with Speranta winning it with a 75 min penalty by Iurcu.
We were parked with an eye on a quick departure for the evening game at Zimbru , trying to avoid match traffic :ROFLMAO:.
It was a 70 min drive to Arena Zimbru and a revisit for me but driver needed it so it was his best performance and inc border crossing he did it with 5 minutes to spare. Fortunately the game was much better , Zimbru looking good although falling behind after 10 minutes , it was 1-1 at the break with Zimbru taking the lead on the hour mark and then having to wait until the last minute to wrap it up.
Back to hotel and checked in , bags had been taken up to room and we were given (credit card) key.
Wined and dined at hotel.
Morning and it was breakfast , tourist things for driver , game at Petrocub and back Sunday night to Luton with Wizz on the W6 3797 arriving at Luton at 23-25 (25 early.

UEFA Cup Round Two First Leg
St Johnstone v Vasas Budapest, 2-0, H.T. 1-0, Att 12,000
At Muirton Park

Having disposed of SV Hamburg in the First Round, Saints next opponents were the less glamorous Vasas from Budapest, with the first leg at Muirton.

When the draw for was made, the Hungarians asked Saints to book a hotel and organise transport from Glasgow Airport for the team and club officials. Mistakenly, Vasas thought that Saints played in Johnstone, Renfrewshire. They looked at the map of Scotland and thought, bingo, right next to Glasgow Airport.

The Hungarian party duly boarded the bus organised by the Club but, by the team it reached Dunblane, they began to worry as they felt they should have arrived in Johnstone by now. One of the visiting party asked the driver how long it would be until they reached their destination and, when the driver answered that Perth was another 45 minutes away, the visitors were horrified and thought they were being kidnapped!

After all they had thought they were going to Johnstone and now were told that Perth was the destination. Uproar abounded. The poor bus driver had to explain that Saints didn't play in Johnstone but in Perth and that the directors were waiting to welcome the Hungarians to the Fair City.

Still not entirely convinced, the Vasas party agreed to continue their journey and were only placated when the Saints hierarchy explained there was no kidnap attempt and that Perth, and St. Johnstone Football Club, were perfectly friendly - which is more than can be said about the Budapest players on the pitch.

I remember being very excited at the prospect of this game. Hungary weren’t really on my footballing radar having been too young to remember much about the 1966 World Cup and they having not qualified in 1970. I had heard of the great 1950s Hungarians but if I expected this gang to resemble them in any way then I was to be disappointed.

Saints: Jim Donaldson, John Lambie, Willie Coburn, Alex Rennie, Alex Gordon, Ian McPhee, Kenny Aird, Gordon Whitelaw, Jim Pearson, John Connolly and Fred Aitken. Subs John Muir and Jim Argue
Vasas: Gyula Tamas, Peter Torok, Tibor Fabian, Kalman Ihasz, Lajos Lakinger, Csaba Vidats, Lajos Puskas, Sandor Muller, Emo Kovacs, Bela Varadi, Jano Farkas.

Farkas was the best known name in the Vasas team. He won 33 caps for Hungary, netting 20 goals.

The Norwegian referee awarded Saints a hotly-disputed penalty after just 12 minutes which was converted by John Connolly. The Hungarians protested vigorously and continued their petulance throughout the entire game. A stronger referee might have booked any number of the visitors although, to be fair, Saints were not slow to get a spot of retaliation in at times.

Midway through the second half Vasas thought they had equalised. They broke fast and Vidats had the ball in the net but the ref disallowed the goal causing hysteria amongst the visitors.

A second goal, headed in by Jim Pearson late on, gave Saints a 2-0 lead to take to Budapest. Vasas lost the plot after that with the final minutes played in manner more befitting of the Colosseum than a football ground. At the end one Vasas player had to be escorted from the arena by the Polis after attacking a Saints fan in the enclosure.

Saints lost the Second Leg in the Nep Stadion 0-1 but went through 2-1 on aggregate.

Pearson heads the second goal at the Ice Rink End:

My list of 18 games starts with the final one of my three Happy Mondays at Wokingham,
After this, my initial training was finished and I had to go to work. Writing and testing computer programmes on paper tape.

1980 - Wokingham Town 2-1 Farnborough Town
1981 - Basingstoke Town 4-1 Hillingdon Borough
1982 - Newbury Town 2-1 Fleet Town (Athenian League, on a Wednesday)

1984 - Mexborough Town Athletic 1-4 Southport (90). FA Trophy.
1987 - Ossett Albion 1-2 Emley (266). Northern Counties East
1991 - Berriew 3-1 UCW (Aberystwyth) (40). Mid-Wales League on a Sunday. With the students' team not starting fixtures until term starts, they had to play a few Sunday games to catch up.

1992 - Hatfield Main 1-2 Belper Town (100). Northern Counties (East)
1993 - Gedling Town 1-1 Kiveton Park (60), Central Midlands

1997 - Whitehawk 0-1 Slade Green (aet). (120). FA Vase. The referee was Banbury's finest, Mr. Dermot Gallagher and he was a bit put out to find that groundhoppers could knock on the door and ask to see the team list. He did supply it though, and so I know that Trevor Lee scored the goal for the Kentish Men, (or is it Men of Kent) in the 95th minutes

1998 - Crystal Palace 3-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers (16,417). I did not need to disturb the referee to get the team lists here
2001 - Cheltenham Town 3-1 Exeter City (3393) - or here. Back in the days when Cheltenham always beat Exeter.
2002 - Waaslandia 0-1 Willebroek-Meerhof (400). Day trip, I would think, for a fourth division game

2007 - Second day of a short trip, which I think would have been fly-drive from Ryanair's airport, closer to Luxembourg than Frankfurt, (and hence called Frankfurt). Stuttgart Kickers 1-1 SSV Reutlingen (3470) and Sportfreunde Schwäbisch Hall 3-0 Türksport Neckarsulm (200) in Landesliga Württemberg.

2009 - Cheltenham Town (reserves) 0-4 Gloucester City (firsts) (535). Glos Senior Cup.

2012 - Inter Zapresic 0-2 Dinamo Zagreb (3200). Easily done on a short train ride from Zagreb

P1050732 m.JPG

2017 - Ravenshead 4-2 Mansfield Hosiery Mills (42). Notts Senior League. A Friday night fllodlit game, on a ground without even a rail around the pitchIMG_20171020_192027 m.jpg

2018 - Weston-super-Mare 1-0 Bath City (1053). FA Cup - 4Q. Persuaded by a friend to go out for a beer or two in Weston, and to take in this ground as a revisit. I think most of the beer was taken in Bristol, where the options are better.

2019 - Romilly Pont-St.-Pierre 2-1 Stade Sotteville Cheminot (130). Regional 1, Normandy. Both teams were going well, with Romily moving up to National 3 for this seasonIMG_20191020_145716_1 m.jpg

Wrexham and a general look out for some of the friendly teams I've been observing at around the country.
Doing this between work calls.

1973 - Hamworthy United v Dorchester United (Dorset Combination) - linesman, it was called the Nursery Ground prior to Dorset FA building their HQ there, which was some years hence.
1974 - Stamford Hall v Villiers Hall (Inter Hall) played in goal in a 3-2 defeat, followed by:
Wadkin v Weston Olympic Res (Leicester Sunday 5) - referee. I have this down as being played at Wadkin SC, presumably somewhere in Leicester?
1979 - Uxbridge Res v Wandsworth Res (London Intermediate Cup Round 1Q) - linesman, extra time played.
1984 - Wembley v Hornchurch (FA Trophy Round 1Q) - linesman, att. 72.
1987 - Hampton Res v Woking Res (Suburban South) - referee.
1990 - Fulham Compton OB v Hale End Athletic (SOL Senior 2) - referee, played at Barnes Common, next to Barnes station.
1991 - Plessey v Stourpaine (Dorset Sunday 2) - referee, played at Upton Rec.
1996 - Dorset Commercials v Excell (Dorset Sunday 4 Poole & West) - referee, played at Branksome Rec.
2001 - Swanage Town & Herston v Downton (Wessex) - observer.
2002 - Winton Liberal v P&K Sports (Bournemouth Sunday 2) - referee, played at Fernheath Road.
2007 - Westbury United v Bridport (Western 1) - observer, att. 34.
2012 - Ringwood Town v US Portsmouth (Wessex 1) - observer, att. 30.

possibly a few more to follow after next work call.

Wrexham and a general look out for some of the friendly teams I've been observing at around the country.
2013 - Oakdale Conservative Club v AFC Wimborne (Robbins Cup Round 3) - referee, still haven't got the hang of settling games in 90 mins, played at Upton Rec.
2018 - Ringwood Town v AFC Stoneham (Wessex 1) - observer, att. 41.
2019 - Inham Celtic v Clifton United (Notts Sunday 2) - referee, played at Chilwell Olympia. It almost felt like the changing rooms were further from the pitch than my house was. A vivid reminder of why I'd stopped refereeing Sunday football. Let's just say the home team have a little bit of a reputation.

Tuesday 20th October 1987
Isthmian League Division 2 North kick off 1930
Hornchurch v Clapton at Bridge Avenue
Score 1-1 half time 0-0 Attendance around 70
A game that looked like it might finish 0-0 but as the rain
got heavier the game started to improve and the last 15
minutes were very entertaining. Clapton scored after 78
but Hornchurch made it 1-1 three minutes later.
A draw probably a fair result.

Tuesday 20th October 1998
Nationwide Division 3
Brighton v Plymouth Argyle at Priestfield Gillingham
Score 1-3 half time 0-1 Attendance 1793
Admission £10 Programme £1.70
It's easy to forget that Brighton played at Gillingham for
two seasons before they moved back to Brighton to play
at the Withdean stadium. Albion started well but Plymouth
gradually got on top and led with a 26th minute headed goal.
A second Plymouth goal followed on 53 minutes again
a header, Brighton pulled a goal back on 84 minutes
when Barker scored from close range. Brighton then pushed
forward looking for the equaliser inevitably leaving gaps at the
back and they conceded a last minute penalty which
Martin Barlow converted for his second goal of the game,

Saturday 20th October 2001
FA Vase 1st Round kick off 1500
Rossington Main v Curzon Ashton at Oxford Street
Score 1-2 half time 1-0 Attendance 92
Admission £3 Programme 50p
A trip by train to Doncaster then bus to Rossington for a match in
my favourite competition. A first half of few goal scoring chances
with Rossington taking the lead just before the break with a penalty.
Curzon levelled just after the interval after a fine passing move
led to the ball being converted from close range. Curzon were then
well on top and the winner was one of those cross cum shot efforts
that went into the top corner, Rossington never really threatened
after this. Curzon lost at Billingham Town in the next round.

Wednesday 20th October 2010
Football Combination kick off 1400
Gillingham Reserves v Crawley Reserves at Priestfield
Score 2-1 half time 2-0 Attendance around 150
Admission £3 team sheet free
Gills well on top in the first half but they played poorly in the
second and missed a penalty. Crawley unlucky not to
get at least a point.

1990 Westmorland Senior Cup, 2nd rnd: Kent Victoria 0 Netherfield 9 (75)
During a holiday in the Lake District. Netherfield's first team were far too strong for Westmorland League Kent Victoria. The home side played at the Jubilee Playing Fields in Kendal. They changed name to Victoria Sporting Club from the 1990/91 season, and folded about 15 years ago.

1993 Central Midlands Lge, Supreme Div: Gedling Town 1 Kiveton Park 1 (60)

1996 Scottish Lge, Premier Div: Heart of Midlothian 2 Celtic 2 (13,352)

2001 Lancashire Amateur Cup, 3rd rnd: Walkden 1 Mossley Hill Athletic 4 (18)

2002 Montgomeryshire Cup, 2nd rnd: Kingswood Forden 2 Carno 2 aet 1-3 on pens (11)

A Sunday match. Kingwood Forden were short-lived and shared with Forden United.

2003 Midland Combination, Div 3: University of Birmingham 4 Kenilworth Town reserves 0 (29)
I don't think the home side were in the Midland Combination for long. This was a midweek game on a floodlit pitch at the Munrow Sports Centre. The site of the pitch is now covered by a combination of car park, road and a university building.

2007
2pm League of Ireland, Div 1: Cobh Ramblers 2 Dundalk 1 (1,200)
6.30pm League of Ireland, Div 1: Wexford Youths 0 Finn Harps 1 (600)

Late fixtures changes (as usual for Ireland) meant these two games ended up on the same day, which hadn't been the original plan. It was a tight double, but just about doable.

2012
11am Football Lge Youth Alliance Cup, Southern Section Gp 3: Peterborough United U18 1 Stevenage U18 0 (41)
1.45pm Peterborough Senior Cup, 2nd rnd: Netherton United 6 Langtoft United 2 (24)

This was before Netherton moved into the 3G cage, and was played on the adjacent grass pitch.

2013 Torridge Cup, prelim rnd: Dolton Rangers 1 Holsworthy 3 (39)

2018
10.30am North East Christian Fellowship Lge, Premier Div: Jesmond Parish Church 1 St Charles RC Church Gosforth 5 (5)
2.30pm East of Scotland Lge, Conference B: Eyemouth United 3 Dundonald Bluebell 6 (35)

A cross border double. Good to see Eyemouth United back this season after a spell in abeyance. Not that anyone can watch them at the moment of course.

Having been at Longford Town the previous evening, I arrived in Dublin aiming to visit St Francis who were new into the LoI this season. The problem - I had no idea where their ground was. I decided that the best bet was to ask at the nearest taxi rank, half expecting that it might take a bit of time as this level of 'soccer' was not well followed.

Almost unbelievably, the first driver I asked had played for St Francis a few years earlier :). This stoke of fortune had a further benefit, not only could he take me straight to the ground but when we got there he was instantly recognised and both he and I were ushed into the boardroom for refreshements. Can't remember if he stayed for the match, but I was welcomed back in the boardroom at half time and he was waiting for me at the final whistle.

Of the match I can remember nothing, although based on experience of LoI second level stuff I doubt it was particularly riveting. St Francis lasted 5 seasons at this level before returning to the Leinster Senior League.
