A very strong looking line up in this season's LFA Sunday Challenge Cup. With 58 teams competing, this is one of the biggest Challenge Cups for years. I have highlighted the ties of interest above in bold. Defending cup holders Lambeth All Stars will begin their defence at home against FC Elmstead whose Saturday team plays at Step 6 in the SCEFL. Lambeth have moved to a new league. After years of success in the Mordern & District League and Metropolitan Sunday League, they have moved to the Orpington and Bromley District Sunday Football League (OBDSFL) which is the strongest Sunday league in the London and home counties area. FC Elmstead play in the division below Lambeth.

There could also be some interesting derbies. Lambeth switched to the OBDSFL by taking the place of long standing OBDSFL team Hatcham in the league's top division (it was the only way they could get around the league's rule which forbids new teams from joining its top division). As a result some Hatcham players merged with another OBDSFL club called Vista to form "Hatcham-Vista".

Additionally one of the country's most popular "YouTube teams" Mile End Baiteze Squad have split with most of their star players leaving to form a new club confusingly called "Baiteze Squad" in the Essex Sunday Corinthian League while the manager Justin Gardner (who also manages Barking at Step 4 in the Isthmian League) continues to manage the remnant Mile End Baiteze Squad in the Hackney and Leyton League.

All 4 of these teams are in this year's Challenge Cup. If Lambeth meet Hatcham-Vista or the two Baiteze Squad teams get drawn against each other, it could be fireworks.

Interesting that The Wrongens and Kedares Town are both in this competition. They are both Division One clubs in the Barnet Sunday League, not the Premier Division.
However, they have both started the season fairly well and have strengthened from last season, so they may not necessarily get outclassed.

Pekunspor are also in there, probably because they were in the top division of the Turkish Community Football Federation last season. But they are only in Division One of the Barnet Sunday League as well.

HughesVideo, there are some interesting omissions too. The beaten 2020 finalists (from only a few weeks ago!) Gower Allstars did not enter. Strange for a team that have reached LFA cup finals two seasons in a row. Also missing are Anorthosis who have returned to the KOPA League. Their controversial resignation from that league last season indirectly led to Gower Allstars reaching the SCC final. Anorthosis were supposed to play Orpington Rovers (a game they would probably have won) but resigned mid-season. Orpington instead played Gower who beat them on their way to the final.

Other prominent omissions are last year’s beaten LFA semi-finalists Highgate Albion and Sporting Club de Mundial. Both teams would have fancied themselves to go very far in the competition.

Highgate Albion and Gower All Stars have been given a Bye as Semi-Finalists last season. You will notice there are only 29 matches in that First Round instead of 32.
Lambeth All Stars were also given a Bye. But their new team 'LAS' in the Orpington & Bromley League have *not* been given a Bye and their Metropolitan Sunday League team appear to have now folded...unless that new 'M Boys' team in that League are them ?

Somebody told me that Sporting Club De Mundial have now folded because of that assault on the Referee incident in Pre-Season, but I guess we will have to wait for the Hackney & Leyton Sunday League to re-appear before we find out for sure.
Of course we always get a number of teams changing their name during the Summer due to sponsorship or whatever, so maybe Sporting Club De Mundial are now Impact, The Bandits (a new team in the Barnet Sunday League), The Wall or Bayswater R.K. ? I have not heard of any of those clubs before at the top level.

Anorthosis have been put in the London Sunday Junior Cup !, while in the London Sunday Challenge Trophy (for Intermediate/Division One-standard teams) we have the likes of Asianos, Spartans, Sudbury Athletic (Hujjat), Hendon United Sports and Mehmetcik (who 'won' the TCFF last season !).
All of those would stand a good chance of at least reaching the Quarter-Finals in the Sunday Challenge Cup. 😲

HughesVideo - that stuff with Lambeth All Stars/“LAS” and Mile End Baiteze Squad/Baiteze Squad is contorted. “LAS” is the team that won the SCC only a few weeks ago! Very weird not to give a round 1 bye to the team that won the whole thing earlier this month!

Anorthosis being in the Challenge Trophy is just bizarre. Especially given that they reached the QF of the SCC last season and can rightfully claim to be “undefeated” since they were not actually knocked out prior to their resignation. Why on earth did the LFA move them down to a less senior cup?!

If Sporting Club de Mundial have been banned from LFA competitions/their league for that ref incident in a pre-season friendly, they may rightly ask why Dumlupinar were allowed to play in (and win!) the SCC after a much more sustained and violent attack on a ref which involved a pitch invasion and several people chasing down and attacking a ref in what resembled a gang beat down. Some called it the worst case of referee assault ever witnessed in Britain:

London FA Sunday Challenge Cup – 2020 Round 1 Preview

The LFA Sunday Challenge Cup (London’s premier Sunday cup competition) gets underway this weekend – Sunday October 11. I have highlighted below, some of the games worth going to watch (which will be played at “proper” grounds too – not just local council parks).

SE DONS (OBDSFL) -V- PECKHAM RYE (WESFA)
Date: Sunday October 11, 2020
Kick-off: 10:30am
Venue: Flamingo Park, Sidcup Bypass, Sidcup, Kent BR7 6HL

SE Dons.jpg

SE Dons are probably Britain’s most famous Sunday league team. They play their home games at Cray Wanderers’ Flaming Park.

SE Dons are the current holders of the Kent Sunday Premier Cup, and in round 1 of this cup last year, they beat the holders Dumlupinar. They have 2 former Sunday Challenge Cup winners in their squad in Jason Dolby and Scott Guichard (both of whom won it with Baldon Sports). SE Dons’ star player is Zak Ansah (son of former Brighton and Leyton Orient pro footballer Andy Ansah) who has played for Herne Bay in the Isthmian League at Step 4. The younger Ansah was formerly on the books at Charlton Athletic.

The club has several played who play(ed) at steps 3-5 in Saturday pyramid football. In fact 4 Dons’ players commitments to their Sunday club (which one of them described like a second job led Herne Bay of the Isthmian League (step 4) to part company with 4 of their players who also play for the Dons (Zak Ansah, George Kamurasi, Ryan Palmer and Salvyn Kisitu). A team at that level did not want their players being risked playing equally (or more) competitive Sunday football.

SE Dons will be overwhelming favourites and should win comfortably. The game will be well attended. Get there early if you want to watch it.

BAITEZE SQUAD (ESSEX SUNDAY CORINTHIAN LEAGUE) -V- GROUND HOPPERS (OBDSFL)

Date: Sunday October 11, 2020
Kick-off: 10:30am
Venue: Oakside Stadium, Station Road, Barkingside, Essex IG6 1NB

Baiteze are another very well known “YouTube team”. They play their home games at Redbridge FC’s stadium.

Baiteze FC.jpg

They have a very impressive squad. Their manager Billy has coached at professional level at clubs such as Gillingham. Their team contains several players who have experience of playing at steps 3-5 and/or at pro level. Their attacking midfielder Imedd Kartita plays for Potters Bar Town in the Isthmian Premier Div (Step 3) and was also in the West Ham and Charlton academies. Striker Jay Knight is also at Barking, and was the top scorer for Sporting Bengal in the ESL (Step 5) 2 seasons ago with 21 goals, and was also Clapton FC’s top scorer in the 2016-2017 season in the same league. Rashid Kamara is another member of their Barking FC contingent (he was also in Arsenal’s academy). Another midfielder Theo Ola was on the books at Spurs and played pro in Denmark for Mjallby. Their tall defender Quincy Egbejale plays for Clapton in the ESL, and Michael Ogboin plays for Southend Manor in the same league. Their latest signing Jason Banton plays for Cray Wanderers at Step 4.

GH FC.jpg

Their opponents Groundhoppers are no push-overs and come with title winning pedigree. They won the Metropolitan Sunday League in 2017, and after moving to the Orpington and Bromley District Sunday League, won its Premier Division (second tier) in 2018 and the London FA Sunday Trophy the same season.

This should be one of the most competitive ties of the round but Baiteze’s home advantage should see them win narrowly by the odd goal.

METROGAS -V- KENNINGWELL UNITED(BOTH OBDSFL)
Date: Sunday October 11, 2020
Kick-off: 10:30am
Venue: Metrogas Sports Ground, Forty Foot Way, Avery Hill Road, New Eltham, London SE9 2EX, Tel: 02088591579

Metrogas Badge.jpg

Metrogas’ Saturday team plays in the Kent County League. The club has been in existence for over 130 years. This will be a league derby in Sunday league terms between two teams who both play in the Orpington and Bromley District Sunday League (OBDSFL). Metrogas won the OBDSFL’s Premier Div in 2019 but for some reason did not get promoted.

Kenningwell Utd.jpg

Their opponents are one of London’s longest running Sunday teams (who have been going for nearly 50 years).

They were founded by guys from Kennington and Stockwell in south London (hence the amalgamation of the two neighbourhoods in the team’s name). They are former OBDSFL champions. The club’s reserve team won the LFA Sunday Junior Cup in 2014 followed by the Sunday Intermediate cup the following year. Kenningell managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in this cup last season. They were 5-1 up with just over 30 minutes to go against Highgate Albion, but somehow contrived to concede 4 goals and lose on penalties. This will be another closely contested game but Kenningwell’s experience should see that through.

Looks like the KOPA League and Turkish Community Football Federation (TCFF) teams all raised their games for the London Sunday Challenge Cup First Round matches played yesterday then. 😲

Also Mehmetcik beating Enfield United 10-0 in the London Sunday Challenge Trophy yesterday is an incredible result...although what are the top team in the TCFF doing in that competition ?!
Enfield United were missing a number of players who had played for Norsemen's First XI in the 2019-2020 AFA Senior Cup Final the day before though.

HughesVideo- I would actually retort that the Cypriot and Turkish teams did not have to “raise their game”. The victories for Dumlupinar, Olympia, Omonia, and Kizilirmak were expected (albeit Mehmetcik’s margin of victory may raise eyebrows). Keep in mind that before Lambeth All Stars won this cup last month, 8 of the last 10 winners of the Challenge Cup were either Cypriot or Turkish teams (and Dumlupinar and Olympia were in 3 of the last 4 finals).

I believe every single Cypriot and Turkish team won their tie yesterday. Plus it will take someone very strong to stop Anorthosis in the Junior Cup.

16. (Barnet Div 1) AFC Oakwood 1 -v- 0 The Bandits (Barnet Div 5)

This one is actually Oakwood from the Maccabi League.

AFC Oakwood from the Barnet Sunday League are in the London Sunday Challenge Trophy...where they beat Komi-Kebir from the KOPA League 2-1 Away in their First Round match on Sunday, which was one of two victories by Barnet Sunday League sides over KOPA or TCFF opponents in that competition, the other being an excellent 3-1 win by Division Two side GTFA against Turkmenkoy, who are traditionally one of the better teams in the TCFF.

Komi-Kebir are actually second in the KOPA League at the moment and unbeaten in their first four matches. They are well above the likes of Olympia, Omonia and other KOPA League teams who had victories in the First Round of the London Sunday Challenge Cup.
However, AFC Oakwood beating them is no surprise to me. They are easily the best team in Division One of the Barnet Sunday League at the moment with the likes of Potters Bar Town (Step 3) players Charlie Ruff & Darion Furlong playing for them in addition to former Watford Academy player Bradley Empson (ex ?-Enfield Town - Step 3) and numerous others from that sort of level. They have only been in existence for a couple of seasons, but it appears they are being 'bankrolled' (sponsored) by a rich local businessman. They will be mixing it with Rising Ballers and the like in the Barnet Sunday League Premier Division next season for sure.

You may also wonder why a Division 5 side from the Barnet Sunday League (in The Bandits) were playing in the First Round of the London Sunday Challenge Cup instead of the Junior Cup. Well, that is because Divisions 5 & 6 of the Barnet Sunday League this season are exclusively for newly-formed sides, with teams consisting of current & former 'Semi-Pros' being placed in Division 5...of which The Bandits are one such side. Even so, it seems strange that the London FA allowed them to go straight into their top Sunday Cup competition.

HughesVideo - thanks for the clarification re Oakwood. The Maccabi Jewish League has weakened from it’s glory years when the likes of Faithfold and London Maccabi Lions reached the latter stages or finals of LFA cups. These days their best team and champions are regularly taking 7 and 8 goal shellackings from the likes of Lapton and Kenningwell Utd. Other community leagues like KOPA (Cypriot) have also weakened due to the departure of their two best teams to the Saturday non-league pyramid.

I was actually going why a team from Div 5 was in the SCC! What league were The Bandits in before? Also, Kedares Town from Div 1 of the BSL is another odd one. The 0-5 thumping they took at the hands of a Mile End Baiteze team made up of an entirely new squad suggests they should not be in the SCC.

Also, do you have any idea which league Impact FC play(ed) in?

The Bandits are a newly-formed club, which is why they are in Division 5. Teams who have joined the Barnet Sunday League this season from other Leagues have been placed in the Premier Division to Division Four as they League already know those teams proven ability.

In addition to Kedares Town, The Wrongens and Pekunspor are also in Division One of the Barnet Sunday League this season but are in the London Sunday Challenge Cup. I suspect in Kedares Town and The Wrongens cases that is because they have new Club Secretaries who were unaware what each competition meant, but then the London FA should be advising them to go in the Challenge Trophy, same as most other Division One clubs do.
Pekunspor were in the TCFF last season, so I suspect that is why they got placed in the Challenge Cup.

I have never heard of Impact FC before. 🤷‍♂️

The 2nd round draw is simply bizarre. First of all the LFA gave a 1st round bye to only 3 of the 4 teams that reached last season’s semis (but forced Kizilirmak to play the first round for some odd reason). They instead have the 4th bye to a team that did not reach the last SF! (FC Elmstead)

Then after keeping last season’s semi-finalists out of round 1, they drew two of them against each other in round 2! (defending champs Lambeth Allstars and Highgate Albion) Those two teams also happen to be finalists in last season’s Middlesex and LFA county cup finals. What was the point of exempting them from round 1 only for them to play each other in the second round?!

Then by some miraculous “random draw”, the 2019 Kent and London champions (SE Dons and Dumlupinar respectively) also got drawn against each other in this round for the second successive season.

Net result = the teams who reached the finals of last season's Middlesex, London, Surrey, and Kent county cups are about to eliminate each other in only round 2. Not good (unless the LFA is trying to clear the road for Rising Ballers and the Baiteze Squads to win it)

Looks like all the favourites have been drawn against each other in the Second Round of the London Sunday Challenge Cup then ?! 😲

Going to be an interesting preview from stevegraze for this round I think. (y);)

SE DONS (OBSFL) -v- DUMLUPINAR (TURKISH COMMUNITY FOOTBALL FEDERATION)
Date: November 1, 2020, KO: 10.30am
Venue: Cray Wanderers FC, Flamingo Park, Sidcup Bypass, Sidcup, Kent BR7 6HL

THE tie of the round! There will likely be a crowd of several hundred people at this game. This game should really be the final. The two teams are the 2019 Kent (SE Dons) and London (Dumlupinar) champions. This is a repeat of last year’s 2nd round tie which SE Dons won 2-1 after a narrow and tight contest following a late penalty.

SE Dons.jpg

SE Dons is probably Britain’s most famous Sunday team. Their star player is Zak Ansah (son of former Brighton and Leyton Orient pro footballer Andy Ansah) formerly of Arsenal, and who also plays as a free scoring striker for Herne Bay in the Isthmian League at Step 4. The younger Ansah was formerly on the books at Arsenal. Both clubs are full of players who play(ed) at steps 3-5. Apart from Ansah, at least 5 other Dons players play for NLS clubs on Saturdays at Step 4 in the Isthmian League (including their giant 6’6 tall GK and captain George Kamurasi, Jack Sammoutis, Ryan Palmer, and Salvyn Kisitu).

Dumlupinar_Yeni_Malatyaspor.jpg

Dumlupinar are probably the best financed team in the cup and also procure the services of NLS Saturday players. Rumour has it that they have a larger player salary budget than most Step 3-4 Saturday NLS clubs. I just cannot see lightning strike twice in successive seasons, and I think Dumlupinar will get revenge for their defeat last year.

HIGHGATE ALBION (BARNET SUNDAY LEAGYE) -v- LAMBETH ALL STARS (OBDSFL)
Date: November 1, 2020, KO: 10.30am
Venue: St Aloysius College Sports Field, Hurst Avenue, Hornsey, Greater London Authority N6 5TX

If SE Dons v Dumlupinar is the tie of the round, then this is a very close second. This tie pitches defending champions Lambeth against 2019 Middlesex Sunday Premier Cup finalists Highgate (who also reached the SF of this cup last season). The LFA has some explaining to do re why these two clubs who were given byes in round 1 on account of reaching last season’s semi-final (Highgate) and final (Lambeth) which was played only last month!, yet find themselves playing each other in their first game of this season’s cup.

Highgate are the two-time consecutive and reigning Barnet Sunday league champions. Several of their players (including their tricky forward Soloman Ofori) play for Hadley on Saturdays in the Essex Senior League (Step 5).

The defending champions Lambeth All Stars are one of the most talked about and feared Sunday teams in London at the moment. Most of their team are ex pros or other players who play for NLS Saturday clubs at Step 4. These include ex Watford and Sunderland defender Nyron Nosworthy, and their forward trio of Omari Hibbert, Aaron Watson, and Ryan Gondoh are also the front three of Whyteleafe FC of the Isthmian League! (Step 4) Defender Charles Banya was formerly at Fulham and was even once included in their Premier League match day squad! Their defender Albie Sheehan-Cozens also plays for Barking of the Isthmian League at Step 4, and forward Andrew Dalhouse and midfielder Jordan Hibbert also play at Step 4 in the Isthmian League for Herne Bay.

Lambeth are undefeated all season with a 100% record, they have already won 2 cups, are in 2 other cup finals, are on for a quadruple, and only one team has managed to avoid losing to them by less than 2 goals (some unfortunate teams have been handed 4-0, 5-1, and 7-2 shellackings in what Lambeth calls “Sunday Service”).

I think Lambeth will have a bit too much quality for Highgate and will win a tightly contested game.

"SE Dons is probably Britain’s most famous Sunday team. "

I'm loving this thread, but I really must dispute this statement. Has anyone outside of London heard of them? I definitely haven't & I could name clubs from all over the country.

For my money St Josephs (Luton) would hold that title, having competed in the FA Sunday Cup for decades & winning it twice & being in the final three more times (twice losing on penalties. As a sidenote, St Joe's were easily the most hospitable club my club encountered on our travels in this competition. I won't name the worst!

In more recent seasons, Hetton Lyons Cricket Club have been very well known as well.

Please continue with these updates, as I'm really missing the FA Sunday Cup this season!
