Following on from the Midnight League thread, what is the latest kick-off match that anyone on this forum has watched? I remember watching a non league game in Portugal that kicked off at 10pm if I remember correctly. I doubt there will have been may late kick offs in the Uk as clubs wouldn't be allowed to use their floodlights late at night due to complaints from the neighbours. Although I vaguely remember some evening matches that were quite late starting due to motorway delays

Sept 3, 2003, Wednesday morning at 00-05.
Spain league game Barcelona v Seville.
Crowd of 80,237.
That was scheduled kick off.

Suppose you could argue that it was the earliest not latest ?

22:05 - Steaua Bucharest v FC Twente in the Europa League last 32 in 2012.

At -6 Celsius it was probably my coldest game too, although a Southern League Cup semi final between Sudbury Town and Dover Athletic that I went to as a kid felt colder.

Two come to mind as going past midnight, both in Malaysia, 1996

1) The final of the FA Selangor League. Kicked off at 21.45 with extra time and penalties., (20 January)
2) The final of Asian QUalifying for the 1996 Olympics, following Saudi Arabia securing a place in the Olymics in sudden death extra time from an 20.00 kick off, the game, Japan v South Korea was rescheduled for 22.15 (and probably kicked off a little later)

None in particular
Uruguay v England in 1984 I remember kicking off around midnight......BST...!
I stayed up and watched it then went to work that morning. The naivety of being young...
(I know this is not what was meant in this thread, but I could not resist. To those without the same warped sense of humour as me, 🤷🏻).

My latest was a scheduled 22:00 start in Spain. I would imagine a lot of people would've seen games in Spain at that time.

Mine was on 19/05/21 Real Zaragoza 4 Athletic Club 3 which was played in a thunderstorm.
Game actually started at 22:01 (I wouldn't normally make a note of this but as it would be my latest I did on this occasion) & despite an early bus back to Bilbao on Sunday morning (to watch Portugalete at 1130) I was hoping for a lot of injury time so the game would finish after midnight. In the end the game finished at 23:53 which is also my latest.

I've seen 9.30pm kick offs in the CONCACAF Gold Cup - their equivalent of the Euros, but without the rampant commercialisation - when held in the US. The group games in the Finals are (or at least used to be) arranged as double headers, so two games back to back in the same stadium. It works well and adds to the atmosphere in and around the stadia, if not during the matches themselves.

Why did it kick off after midnight? Was it for TV?

My Zaragoza match was obviously not 2021 but in 2007.

I remember that Barcelona game being on the news at the time.

I think this was the game that had to kick off after midnight as it had to be played on the Wednesday rather than Tuesday for some reason.

Surprise no one has pulled me up about opposition,

Anyway now I've corrected that , here you go - it was aimed at Seville . Barca asked them to play on the Tuesday evening , Seville refused insisting on the scheduled Wedneday. So Barca responded with OK we will kick off on Wednesday , 5 minutes into it .

All to do with player availability as explained below -

There was a match live on Freesports the other week in the Portugese League that kicked off 9.45pm (local time, which is the same as UK time) - they do it I think so they can get round the "no live TV games from top divisions while Champions League games are on" rule.

Also I noticed that Morocco has relatively late KOs regularly - there's a 9.30pm one tonight.

Also Tim Vickery on the 5 Live World Football Phone In mentioned regularly over the years that due to evening soaps being so popular, that games kicked off after 10pm local time to avoid a clash - I haven't checked to see if things have changed recently.

I think my personal record was a Monday night Conference North game at Ewen Fields (7/11/2011) where Blyth Spartans and the ref & assistants were all caught in motorway holdups and so it kicked off at 8.35 (5 mins later than the latest it was announced that it was allowed to KO).

I didn't attend but the 2008 Champions League final in Moscow kicked off at 2245 local time.

Pompey
The Vitoria Guimaraes v Portsmouth match on Thursday 2nd October 2008 in the Europa League Qualifiers kicked off at 10pm (both local Portuguese and UK time).

Being level on aggregate after ninety minutes, the match went into extra-time, Pompey eventually winning 4-2 on aggregate when play finally ended at gone 00:20 on Friday morning.

Didn't include what I was talking about for some reason - the Brazilian and Argentinian Leagues - kicking off after the evening soap operas, which he suggested was around 10pm

Vague recollections of Workington being delayed en-route and kicking off at Irlam at approaching 9pm. Having watched a game in the West Midlands one evening I also possibly missed an unlikely double as an England under 21/23 (?) game at Molyneux was delayex due to a security scare and kicked off at 10pm.

I have memories of talk in Dec 1999 of there being a battle to be the last team to play in the millennium (ignoring the debate about the start/end of the millennium) with teams attempting to play as late a KO as possible on Fri 31 Dec. I'm sure Barrow were one of the teams talking about it. Did it happen that way or was it abandoned as a silly idea as all the fans would be out and not want to go to the match then?

The last game of the millenium was a Somerset County League game on 31st December 1999 which was a Friday, so it's possible the game involved Berrow rather than Barrow. I'm sure someone in this parish would have been there,
