I attended the same junior and senior schools as Russ Roberts who became comedian/comedy actor Russ Abbott.
My, younger, sister was in the same class as Russ at junior school and also in that class was Graham Pugh. At the age of 18 he went on to appear for Sheffield Wednesday in the 1966 cup final which they lost 2-3 to Everton. Other clubs Graham played for were Huddersfield Town, Barnsley, Scunthorpe United and home town club, Chester.

Caroline Barrett, who reads the travel news on Wave 105 when one of the regular presenters is away, was in the same year as me in both my Middle and Upper Schools. She was previously part of the Morning Crew on 2CR FM, one of the many local radio stations that got swallowed up by Heart.

Footballers Jody Craddock and Christer Warren were three years below me.

I wasn't going to mention this bloke, but his name has come up again in the news recently...

When I was a student in Swansea from 1986 to 1990, I studied at the West Glamorgan Institute (now called Trinity St.David's University). Over the same four years, there was a student called Ramzi Yousef studying for a degree in electrical engineering. He rarely mixed with anyone, drove around Swansea in a knackered white Ford Escort, and used to hang around the Cosy Cafe halfway up Mount Pleasant Hill.

After graduating, he moved to the United States. On 26th February 1993, he parked a van packed with explosives in the underground car-park beneath the North Tower of the World Trade Centre, detonated in an attempt to bring the North Tower crashing down onto the South Tower. The attempt was unsuccessful, but six people were killed, over 1,000 people were injured, and over 50,000 were evacuated from the towers and other surrounding buildings.

On 11th December 1994, he was then responsible for the bombing of a Philippine Airline flight from Manila to Tokyo. A 24yo Japanese passenger called Haruki Ikegami was killed and another ten people injured, but fortunately the pilot kept control and made an emergency landing on Okinawa island, saving the lives of 292 people.

In February 1995, he was captured and arrested in Pakistan, and sent to the United States where he was sentenced to 240 years in prison. When police raided his house in Manila, they found chemistry books that he had taken from the West Glamorgan Institute library. He is now in the high-security ADX Florence prison in Florida.

I was in the same class at Goodrich Road Primary School, East Dulwich, as Michael Bentt who briefly became WBO Heavyweight Champion around 25 years ago.

More recently I attended Haberdashers' Aske's Secondary School, New Cross, at the same time as Tamer Hassan, the actor and entrepreneur who has appeared in a number of films as well as being a one time player and chairman of Greenwich Borough FC.

A little convoluted, but a famous person and a school are involved.

For one year in the 1980s I worked for a year in a certain school in Coventry. One of the other teachers was the girlfriend of the late John Bradbury, the drummer of local band the Specials.

A week or so after I finished my contract she spotted me walking through Coventry. She told me she had split with John, and was looking for someone to go on a holiday that she had already booked. "Do you fancy it", she said. "Yes please", I said to myself in my head. My mouth came out with "No thanks I've got pre-exiting plans".

I didn't really, and I never saw her again. Should have said "Yes".

A few years later I worked for a couple of months at a school for "naughty boys". There were only 30 or so of them, but at least two have subsequently have been sent to prison for murder. I know of two, and, seeing it was 15 years ago, I can't believe none of the others haven't been sent down for murder since.

Paul Heaton, once of the Housemartins, then The Beautiful South, now solo. He was in the year above of my secondary school, seconded in Surrey for a few years whilst his Dad was working down here. Later, 'allegedly' was regularly seen in the Sheff Utd hooligan firm....

Having racked my brains and spoken to friends...absolutely no-one famous at all (or infamous) was educated at my school(s)...Wiltshire (Calne anyway) is such a backwater

I just KNEW someone would post that line!

(I'd have put my money on Ashers if he wasn't 'on holiday' again...)
I was going to say that 240 years for overdue library books is harsh. You don't mess with the West Glamorgan Library Service.
