I think I have this in an old AFS book but I'll need to dig it out.

IIRC, season 1982-83 was the first one following the decision to split the Central League into two divisions.

Was there subsequently any promotion / relegation between the (two?) Central League divisions, or did the division, that a reserve team participated in, primarily depend on the level that their first team was playing in? (i.e. First Division / other?)

Yes from what I've discovered it appears that relegation/promotion came into effect to give teams more competition but I can't confirm this at the moment but will look into it further.
I think 1st teams that were relegated from league Div 2 did drop their reserves into a lower league as did happen with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 80s.
1st teams promoted from league Div 3 did bring their reserves into the CL.
Hope this helps

Hi
Forget what I said about Wolverhampton Wanderers reserves.
They were actually withdrawn from the Central league and they dropped into the Midland Intermediate league and then returned to the Central about 3 seasons later.
To answer your question when the Central league was split into 2 division there was promotion/relegation regardless of what division the first teams were in.
As you say it changed when the Premier league reserves division came into being 1992/93.
Premier & Championship reserves teams played in it until about 2006/07 when the Premier league insisted only Premier reserves sides could play in it.
The championship sides then had to return to the Central league.
