Holm played Bilbo in the films but played Frodo in the 80's adaptation of LOTR on Radio 4. This was an excellent version and had a starry cast. Michael Hordern as Gandalf, Robert Stephens as Aragorn, Bill Nighy as Sam Gamgee, Peter Vaughan as Denethor and Jack May ( Nelson Gabriel from the Archers) as King Theoden.

Former Liberal Democrat MP and Peer, Baroness Diana Maddock, has died aged 75. She took Christchurch off the Conservatives in a By-Election triggered by the death of Robert Adley in 1993 but lost the seat in the 1997 General Election to Chris Chope. It was the only seat the Tories regained in their landslide defeat to Tony Blair's new Labour party.

A face that cropped up on telly so many times - best known for playing Chief Supt. Kernan in 'Prime Suspect', he also used to be regularly cast as heavies in other police shows like 'The Bill'. He also cropped up in an episode of Minder, in the excellent 1982 episode 'Back In Good Old England', alongside Pete Postlethwaite. And I can first remember seeing him on television in the BBC's 1981 production of 'Day Of The Triffids'. A good actor.

Perhaps best known for writing and singing the 1979 hit 'The Devil Went Down To Georgia'...

The greatest musical score and the greatest scene in the greatest film in cinematic history, I reckon...

Personally, as far as Westerns are concerned, I would name 'The Wild Bunch' (1969) and in particular the shootout at the end, with its stunning editing and ballet-like violence.
