The death has been announced of Alan Garner at the age of 69.

Alan was a centre-half brought to Portsmouth from Watford by manager Frank Burrows in 1980. At Watford, he was a fans' favourite, making over 200 appearances and winning the player-of-the-season accolade during their climb up through the divisions under Graham Taylor. Once at Portsmouth, he formed a strong playing partnership with Steve Aizlewood, becoming a skillful and popular player whose play was always easy on the eye.

Alan helped Pompey to promotion to the Third Division in 1980, but fell out of favour with new manager Bobby Campbell due to injury, and was released following 44 appearances and three goals for the club, being replaced by Ernie Howe at the start of the title-winning 1982~83 season.
