Organisers have set a May deadline over whether to postpone the tournament to 2022. If the decision is to go ahead as planned, they will consider if venues are to be full or have reduced, socially distanced crowds:

Meanwhile, former footballer John Terry and golfer Lee Westwood will help the England squad with their preparations.

I don't see the point of the competition going ahead without Australia and New Zealand. The withdrawals seem a little premature but at least it should focus minds on re-scheduling (or cancelling) it in good time.

Could they not go ahead with the players from Aus and NZ that are already over here? Not an ideal situation and numbers would probably need to be made up but gotta be a whole lot better than the pair of them just withdrawing from the tournament.

I agree, I'm no covid conspiracy theorist, indeed lived through this in the extremely clinically vulnerable group, but life goes on. I'm afraid we'll have to live with it, perhaps the whinging Aussies should?
Still sensible too be cautious, and trips to shops today saw most people still wearing masks, however, for me, time to start living again.

Strange that cyclists from down under have competed in the Giro and Tour so far this year and both countries are at the Olympics despite Tokyo being in lockdown, double standards seem to be operating.

No point going ahead without two of the main attractions and how many other Southern Hemisphere countries will dropout.

The rumour is that NRL clubs are pulling the strings here. They don't want their players competing in the World Cup and risking them missing the start of the NRL season should they become infected or have to self isolate on their return.

Added to which Cricket Australia have confirmed that the men's national team will be going to Bangladesh in August.
