Bonnyrigg Rose v Montrose is all-ticket, with no payment at the gate. Cost £10/£5.

The club say hundreds were turned away ticketless from the last tie - Bonnyrigg v Buckie. Capacity for the Montrose tie is 2,000.

Madness - the crowd for the Buckie game was 1678 and anyone who watched it on TV will have seen plenty of room to accommodate hundreds more. I never understand why so many clubs turn away paying customers when the ground is not full, even taking into account any segregation requirements.

Mick, read the Bonnyrigg website. They fully explain th e reason for the capacity. Also if it is a wet day the majority of the ground is grass banking with no crush barriers. No seats either.

Just one side has grass banking - and it’s the only side with crush barriers.

I have read the website and, leaving aside your misinformation concerning the banking and crush barriers, I can only find reference to a licensed capacity of 2,640 which had to be reduced for the Buckie game beacuse of TV & VIP requirements. I could see no specific figure for the reduced capacity, but I doubt whether TV facililities etc would take up the room of almost 1000 spectators.

The stated explanation for the actual capping at below 1700 of being "primarily for the safety of supporters that already have purchased tickets, who will be watching a competitive fixture at New Dundas Park under artificial light for the first time." smacks rather of Junior views regarding the 'devil's candles' than a meaningful reason. If I have missed the full explanation please let me know what it was.

As already mentioned, TV viewers would have been able to clearly see the swathes of unfilled capacity at both ends.

Re: [mick] William Hill Scottish Cup 2019-20 [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

"Torrential rain throughout the day made playing conditions difficult and spectating conditions even more so. The small covered enclosure was rammed to capacity half an hour before kick off. The remainder of the grassy bankings were treacherous in the extreme and by the end resembled the mudfields of the Somme. This was not helped by a lack of toilet facilities for the bumper crowd – most male supporters on the far side opted to just pish through the slats in the wooden fence at the back of the banking rather than trying to fight their way through the throng on the other side of the ground. Likewise refreshments were a forlorn hope for most with just one outlet.

This emphasises that whilst Bonnyrigg may have pretensions of promotion to the SPFL – they will have a massive amount of work to do between now and the end of the season if they are to be eligible for SPFL membership. The bankings will need to be at least concreted. They will have to have two sets of proper turnstiles to enable segregation. That means new toilets and catering facilities in the away section. New Dundas Park is unusual in that there is only access to one side of the ground – the remainder is entirely surrounded by houses and private gardens. They have no way of bringing in a burger van or portaloos to the far side of the ground. Oh, and seats – the SPFL would insist on some of those as well"

The above is quoted from my WDYG report on the Bonnyrigg v Buckie match.

For clarity, there are crush barriers in the covered enclosure as well as some on the grass banking. I left the covered enclosure around 20 minutes before kick off as I thought it was seriously overcrowded and I couldn't get a decent view of the game. I then watched from the grassy bank side which had plenty room but was certainly dangerous underfoot. Most people stood on the flat bit at the back or down at pitchside - it was too slippy to stand on the slope with any hope of remaining upright.

As far as I could see Bonnyrigg were initially admitting people for cash on the night - there were two separate queues, one for cash and one for tickets. Once the capacity was reached they closed the cash gate.

For such a game the club had to get a Safety Certificate from the local council. The capacity will have been calculated using the Green Guide. Given this week's weather I'd say 2000 capacity is the Council being very generous indeed.

Thanks for that. Seems rather strange that the licenced capacity is stated as 2,640 yet the 'safe' capacity is seemingly ~25% less. Normally you would expect a licensing body to err on the side of caution and underestimate the safe capacity rather than overestimate it.

When my team, Auchinleck Talbot played Ayr last season our capacity was reduced from between 3,600 and 4,00 down to 3,150 because we were on the television. The tv cameras, lorries all took up space which meant our capacity had to be lowered, and also access for emergency services vehicles is taken into account.

When we played at Kelty Hearts this season, a similar set up was in operation, and an area capable of holding many more than the 1,400 allocated tickets was because they had a grass banking behind the goal. Although there was no attempt by anyone to stop folk standing on the bank - just the same as Bonnyrigg - it can not be used to in calculating the capacity for such games.

We have Arbroath tomorrow, and although our capacity won't be tested (I expect about 1800 to 200) we could theoretically get nearly 4,000 in as there's no room needed for the media. Without tickets or turnstiles, there's no real means of knowing just how many folk are going into the ground at any one time. Strange days.

Nonleague cup upsets seem to be on the rise in Scotland. Is this just my perception or would those up there agree & if so is there reason’s why?

Brora v Greenock Morton replay wasn't P-P - that replay was always due 3rd Dec at the first time of asking.

Something that one Morton fan would have done well to have looked up - there was a post circulating of him having got all the way up there a week early!!

R4 TV picks :
Friday 17 Jan 7:45pm, Premier Sports, The Rangers v Stranraer (ridiculous!, but sadly predictable)
Saturday 18 Jan 5:30pm, Premier Sports, Partick Thistle v Celtic
Saturday 18 Jan 7:20pm, BBC Scotland, Dundee v Motherwell
Sunday 19 Jan 3pm, BBC 1 Scotland, Dundee United v Hibs

The Dundee Saturday Morning League will be on its winter break (until 1st Feb), but with a bit of imagination trebles should be achievable.
