England's 1000 (+/-59?) Can't Post or Reply Privately

Nice bit of work on the BBC to run up to England's 1000th game on Thursday.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50340459
record to date: Played 999, Won 568, Draw 241, Lost 190

But, my old friends at http://www.eloratings.net/ show England as having played 1058 times
Win 618, Draw 253, Lost 197 - so who are the other 59 games against

Great BBC article(not).

The 3 abandoned games include the fogged off one on Prague, I know it was foggy and I'd had a drink but I'm sure I was in Bratislava.

The BBC article breaks down the England games thus:

H 433 A 442 N 124 Total 999

Elo has

H 458 A 488 N 112 Total 1058

So the lesser total has more neutral games. Hmmm

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Solved part of the puzzle anyway.

The elo site gives year by year tables going back to 1901 and it looks like the England stats include some unofficial games such as the Ibrox disaster game in 1902 and some England amateur internationals in the 1900s which were official internationals for the opponents.

The ELO records include 7 Olympic matches, which I am sure are not included on the list of 999. Wartime internationals are not included though

In the meantime, with a special thought for former Cheltenham player Shane Duff, who was stopped from playing cricket when he signed professional forms for Cheltenham, here is a mention for the dual internationalshttps://www.thetimes.co.uk/...f79f3f8a2ec9a19585fa
Shane Duff, the brother of current Cheltenham Manager Michael Duff, was playing cricket for Shipton when they reached two village cup finals at Lords. He went on to play U-21 football for Northern Ireland.

Perhaps the match against Aylesbury United in 1988 was one of the other 59Sly. I also recall, just before the 1982 World Cup finals in Spain, England played Iceland in Reykjavik in a friendly which I don't think counted as a full international and, just before the 1986 finals in Mexico, England played a friendly against South Korea in Colorado Springs winning 4-1 iirc but it didn't count as a full international, perhaps it was just a training match. I'd imagine the third abandoned game was Republic of Ireland at Lansdowne Road in February 1995 when England fans rioted.

Recall my visit to Hong Kong was originally billed as Hong Kong v England with caps being awarded, this turned into a Hong Kong Golden Select with no caps.

EDIT. The abandoned games are listed in the first link with a venue incorrect.

Just to add to the fun, only the 1953 game v Argentina and 1995 game v Republic of Ireland are listed as abandoned games

The 1975 game in Czechoslovakia was replayed the following day and only the completed game is listed among the first 1000 games

Well they played for 17 mins before the fog caused it to be abandoned.

The game against Team America in the 1976 Bicentennial Cup could be one: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/...nnial_Cup_Tournament
That wiki link also refers to England's various matches against Rest of the World and Rest of Europe - they might also be amongst the 59?
