Les Campbell (1935-2019) has died at the age of 84.
He was a slightly built left winger who first played for his home town team Wigan Athletic, before moving into the Football League in 1953 with Preston North End where he spent seven years, followed by a year at Blackpool. He didn't quite hold down a regular place at either club but he did at Tranmere Rovers where he remained until 1964.
Then, he returned to Wigan Athletic, and featured in the Cheshire County League championship winning team of1964-65. He won two more championships the following two seasons after moving to Altrincham, but sadly broke his leg twice in 66-67. His appearances were sparser in 1967-68 and then he finished his career at Netherfield.

Remember him well. Though he played far more games for Tranmere at 7 rather than 11, in the days when shirt numbers meant something.
One game stays in the memory. 2-2 in the FA Cup v Chelsea (Bonetti, Harris, Venables, Tambling, Blunstone and all) in the big freeze of 1963, played on a snowbound pitch. A young Johnny King scored the first with a header which came straight towards me behind the goal at the Kop end. And highlights on TV later as it was one of the few games on!
