Serbian Ground hop 7 - (1-4 November 2019) Can't Post or Reply Privately

Another great hop, as usual down to the great team of Peter Miles and our 3 Serb friends - Alex, Bogdan and Teodora.

Brief update on games and grounds we visited.

Flights are reasonable with Wizz Air and in-country costs are cheap - transport is not easy when leaving the capital so having a bus for whole weekend is great. Crowds are very low - not much difference between the top division or regional third divisions.

Friday 1 November, 1.30pm Kick off
Prva Liga
OFK Backa Palanka 2 FK Dinamo Vranje 0
Attendance: 228 ( local paper said 500!!)
Admission 300 dnr (under £3)
No programme, but press sheets obtained with ease.

Picked up from airport and a drive north to our first game.

Home team getting an easy win after visitors went down to 10 men . Nice ground with English style floodlights and one large stand. Opposite side dugouts plus a few steps of terracing- whole ground painted in blue, very neat and tidy.

After game, we were welcomed into the board room for a quick talk about the history of the club.

Meal in Nova Sad on way back and then a drive to our base in Belgrade.

Day 2 Saturday 2 November

Drive south to Gornji Milanovac and two games.

Arriving at lunchtime with our first game at 1.30pm we found two clubs right next to each other , closer than the the two Dundee clubs or the two separated by a tram line in Budapest.

We were met by a club official from the club that sit near the top of the Prva Liga - FK Metalac - a factory team, Metalac is now multi national- and money made by making saucepans. We were given a tour of this very modern ground- all parts, the pitch, changing rooms, VIP seats and Press box. Two seated stands with a few rows of terracing behind one goal, same end that backs onto the ground of FK Takovo.

The stadium has everything a small club could need , meets UEFA standards and has hosted a Serbian Under 21 game. We were told that we would be sitting ( for free) in the VIP seats for the game later in the day. Tour finished at 1.25pm, giving us 5 minutes to walk the 120 metres to the entrance to the Takovo game.

FK Takovo 1 FK Lozinca 2
SD Takovo Stadium
Srpske Liga Zapad (regional third division)

Attendance: 187
No programmes
Admission: 100dnr ( under a £1)

Good win for the away team, however the home team kept trying and almost got an equaliser in the second half.

The ground had no cover but rows of open seating on one side, athletics track surrounding the pitch, in the corner by the entrance was an excellent clubhouse, serving draught beer, freshly made coffee.

Made very welcome - talk by club president at half time, free beer and coffee and then attempting to outdo their neighbours- we were given a shirt worn by the first team last season! Takovo are one of the oldest teams in Serbia (1911) and have little time for their neighbours who only appeared on the scene in the 60s even if many of the FK Takovo supporters work for Metalac!.

Once game over, a quick two minute walk to our VIP seats next door for the Metalac game.

FK Metalac 1 FK Radnicki Pirot 0
Prva Liga

Admission: Free but think it was only a couple of quid if you did have to pay.
Attendance: 289
Programmes: No but we all got a press sheet in the VIP area

Not the most exciting game, Metalac are pouring plenty of money into the team and hope to be promoted at the end of the season.

After game, invited into VIP bar for a talk by their president, and were surprised to also be met by the president of FK Takovo!

After being told the two clubs did not get on, we found out the two presidents were related and the FK Takovo president is actualy a season ticket holder at Metalac.

We then left for a group meal and the FK Takovo president joined us for the dinner. We then drove further south to the old Serb capital of Krusevac, where we would stay the night.

Sunday November 3rd

After some issues with hotel rooms in Krusevac ( it seems we had booked up almost every hotel in the city) we took a short drive north to our morning fixture at 1130am in the town of Paracin - where employment is mainly in a sweet factory.

We went to the wrong ground at first - arriving at a 4th Division club - FK Jedinstvo Paracin - a real gem at 12,000, a club who once lost to Hadjuk Split in a Yugoslav Cup semi final. the place is known as 'Green Hell' but in fact the crumbling terraces were painted light blue, it seems the ground had been used in a film about the 1930 World Cup which saw it painted in the same blue as used in stadiums in Uruguay!

]SFS Borac Paracin 6 Trstenik 0
Srpske Liga Istock
Stadion Borac

Admission: Free
Attendance: 119

The most basic ground of the weekend, an open sports field with athletics track around it but did have open bench seating on one side of the ground with the changing rooms in the corner of the sports field. Across the road was a café selling good cakes!

One side third division game, just amazing to think the club play a division higher than a club in the same town with a 12,000 seat stadium!

It was then back south to Krusevac for our final game of the trip and our only Superliga game.

FK Napredak 0 FK Spartak Subotica 1
Stadion Mladost

Admission: 300dnr ( under £3)
Attendance: 520

We had seen Subotica on a previous trip but they looked a much better team today, they even had their keeper sent off however the sub keeper then saved the penalty and also made a couple of other great saves as the visitors held onto their one nil lead.

The stadium had 3 open stands and one large seated stand with the top tier under the roof - the far terrace is currently having new red seats placed on it so will soon be an all seater stadium.

Conclusion: A great trip and some thought may be the last however plans already in place for a May return and after visiting the home of Jedinstvo Paracin, we know there are plenty of gems still to discover.

Finding that stadium by chance was a highlight however the best day was the Saturday and how welcome we were made by both FK Metalac and their neighbours FK Takovo. Both well worth a visit

More on the 'Green Hell' - ground of FK Jedinstvo Paracin

In 2010, a film was produced in Serbia called, " Montevideo, God Bless You" about Serbia qualifying for the 1930 World Cup - much of the football scenes were filmed in Tenerife .

In 2014 a follow up was made, this time more of a comedy!! - "See you in Montevideo" filmed this time in Belgrade, Paracin and Tenerife again.

So 5 years later the "Green Hell" is still coloured in the light blue of the Uruguayan flag!
