I discovered thanks to Tim of this parish that South Devon Leaguers Watts Blake Bearne had moved to a new pitch within the same Abbrook Park complex so the plan is Watts Blake Bearne v Barton Athletic in the Devon FA Senior Cup 2nd round (2.15pm)

My favourite was FA VASE Lopes Tavares v Stanway Rovers to finally tick off Terence MacMillan Stadium but currently on antibiotic for water infection & fatigue may stop me tackling inner M25 traffic area.

More likely now to be staying localish with Worcester Raiders res at Brickfield hub closest for a tick but not very excited by prospect. A number of opportunities at step7/8 in Cheshire, central mids 1, Buckingham utd., Sandridge or Bromley Heath exist but weather & energy levels will decide.

Had intended going to London for a double so I could watch the British Airways v Jersey Bulls game at 19:30 at Bedfont & Feltham (re-visit). As it appears to be a non artificial pitch & with the forecast of rain along with not feeling that great I may give it a miss.

Probably staying fairly local even with the possibility of a re-visit.

I've just had confirmation from Bridgham Utd advising that their cup game (ko 1500) against Wensum Albion is being played at Walsham le Willows. Not on the main pitch (WLW reserves are on that today he advised) but across the road.

That's where I'm heading.

FA VASE 1st Round: New Salamis (SSML Div 1) -v- Eynesbury Rovers (SSML Premier Div) at Enfield FC, Donkey Lane, Enfield
Attendance: 60 approx (rough head-count)

New Salamis have problems. Firstly, 2 weeks ago they fired their long standing manager George Georgiou who oversaw the club’s most ever successful period in an 11 year period that saw them win the FA (national) Sunday Cup, the London FA Sunday Challenge Cup 5 times, the KOPA League 9 times (including 4 times in a row), reach 2 FA Sunday Cup finals in a row, and reach 3 FA Sunday Cup semi-finals in a row.

Georgiou’s Assistant Manager Andrew Kouroushi was in temporary charge for this game. Scott Sinclair gave Eynesbury a first half lead and the HT score was 1-0 to Eynesbury. Jack Uttridge made it 2-0 in the 50th minute after a 25 yard screamer that crashed in off the GK’s right hand post. Salamis got a lifeline after their muscular winger Deniz Mehmet was brought down after a surging run down the left and they got a penalty. Courtney Austin converted the penalty in the 54th minute to make it 2-1 and gave Salamis momentum as they mounted some good attacks with Mehmet looking dangerous on the left. A few minutes after they got back in the game, Salamis gave away a clumsy FK on the edge of their box (inside the “D”). The FK deflected off the wall and Danny Draper converted the rebound to make it 3-1 to Eynesbury in the 59th minute.

As Salamis chased the game Eynesbury opened them up with clinical counter-attacks and finishing. Salamis center back Lee White won a good header but unfortunately he headed the ball into the center of the pitch where Craig Daniel picked up the ball as it fell, and made it 4-1 in the 74th minute after a fine run and curling shot from the edge of the box. Salamis central defender Marcus Rose hacked down Eynesbury striker Jordan Brown in the box and Jordan Jarrold made it 5-1 from the penalty spot after hitting the ball into the GK’s top right hand corner. Salamis GK Bobby Smith went the right way but could not reach the ball. Jordan Brown later completed the scoring. Salamis sub Antonio Michael gave the ball away after dawdling on the ball in the center circle, Eynesbury regained possession, countered quickly, and Brown scored with a brilliant outside of the foot chip into the top corner from an acute angle as Salamis GK Bobby Smith came out to close the angle on him.

Eynesbury are a very good team. They press manically, do not allow the opposition to make easy passes, and play the ball very direct from back to front to their pacy forwards. Their center halves know how to clear the ball an do not bother to pass out from the back. They hit long diagonal balls for their fast strikers to chase. Speaking of the Eynesbury strikers, their number 10 Jordan Brown is a pocket dynamo and energizer bunny. He reminds me of a non-league Jamie Vardy. He runs, defends from the front, closes down opposition defenders and GK tirelessly and endlessly runs into space. Helps that he has a great engine and is rapid too. I was very impressed with him.

Salamis have problems on and off the pitch. I saw things from them I have never seen before in all my years of watching them. They are clearly not used to losing after winning so many titles over the last 10 years. They fell apart after going 1-3 down, their morale sank, and they argued and complained at each other. Center back Marcus Rose got frustrated with his center back partner Lee White for heading the ball into a dangerous area which resulted in Eynesbury’s 4th goal, White (repeatedly) gave Antonio Michael a piece of his mind after Michael gave the ball away and Eyenesbury scored from the counter. White criticised Michael’s attitude, accused him of playing “under 18 football”, and reminded him that he “does it every week”. Other players criticised RB John Kyriacou for picking up an unnecessary booking and they looked divided and dispirited.

Their commitment to playing a passing game on the ground is commendable but at times they could be more direct. Additionally, their strikers did not help them today with their inability to hold up the ball. Every time the ball reached them they either played a square pass or were unable to hold it up, resulting in Eynesbury counter-attacking. Trying to play a Barcelona style passing game against a fit side like Eynesbury that endlessly press might get them into trouble.

The club’s shock sacking of their manager could have long term negative consequences if they are not careful. This must be New Salamis’ heaviest ever defeat. I cannot imagine them putting in a performance like this under Georgiou. They also had a big turnover of players in the last 1-2 years, lost several players and signed lots of new ones. The club also tried to expand quickly during the summer by adding a reserve team that plays in Div 1 of the Herts County League (“Step 8”) and a new Sunday team to play in the Cypriot KOPA League. That Sunday team folded after 1 game. The ex manager’s son Amelio plays for the reserve team. Will he stay at the club after the way they unceremoniously sacked his dad?
