A dilemma, original plan was Salford City v Cheltenham Town in League 2, which would mean I re-Complete the 92. However it now appears the much altered and improved ground at Buckhurst Hill is staging their Essex Thaneside Trophy match against Walthamstow which could be intriguing. Decisions.....

However it now appears the much altered and improved ground at Buckhurst Hill is staging their Essex Thaneside Trophy match against Walthamstow which could be intriguing. Decisions..... A bit surprising this one as I was not aware that Essex Thameside Trophy games were played on Saturdays. If you had asked me, I would have replied that I thought it was a midweek competition for floodlit clubs. Having just googled it, it looks as though this is more or less correct, so why are Buckhurst Hill playing in it as they are in the Essex Olympian League and don't have floodlights? Looking at the club's twitter, there is a photo of the ground and you can see it doesn't have floodlights, although if you scroll further down, it does mention that the pitch has been rotated through 90 degrees. By the way, Roding Lane is where Eton Manor were playing in the mid-late 1980's although as far as I know, this was a separate ground in the same road.

The Essex Thameside Trophy was in the main a midweek competition although there were occasions when Saturdays would be used to complete fixtures. If clubs drawn against each other had no games, ie they had been knocked out of FA Cup / Vase / Trophy then occasionally a ETT match would take place. I recall seeing Grays beat Chelmsford in the semi final on a bank holiday afternoon in 1985 too, although these instances were rare. Why Buckhurst Hill have been allowed in without lights I have no idea, however in the 80s Barkingside, then at Oakside which at the time had no lights, were allowed to compete in the Thameside, they just played their games away. You are right re Eton Manors old ground, it is in fact directly next door to that of Buckhurst Hill, and is marked on Google Maps as ‘Bright Horizons Chigwell Day Nursery’. Nothing of it exists now other than the car park.

Quite a few clubs were allowed to enter minus lights, playing all their fixtures either away or at neutral grounds. (Lights is not a requirement for entry.) One example is Canvey Island, who, for the seasons 1987-88 through to 1990-91 played in the competition minus lights. Anyway, a very interesting step 7 vs. step 5 fixture is the Buckhurst Hill vs. ESL Walthamstow in the Essex Thames-side Trophy and I will be there. For those interested, I've attached a full list of Canvey's ETT results - with grounds played at.
