FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round

Eden Park Avenue

Beckenham Town 4-3 Raynes Park Vale
{05 SEC-P} v {05 CCL-P}

Adm: 8 + prog

Att: official 65

Directions: avoided Croydon by staying on M25 round to jn 4 but bad traffic congestion on M25 nr Chertsey and again beyond M23 ate away almost all of our time in hand.
Arr c 10' before KO but had to find a street parking space further down Eden Park Ave.

Facilities : 2 low slung seated stands on either side - all other spectator facilities at the clubhouse end. Decent enough food outlet but no Bitter on sale in the bar - mostly bottled lager.

1-0 pen
2-0 free header from a corner just before the break

2-1 early 2nd half
3-1 low drive across the keeper from the edge of the box

Home player saw straight Red for some pushing - didn't unduly alter the balance of play

4-1 FW broke clear

last 5' of the match gave the score a rather unreal slant - RPV were not really in the game and it didn't feel like a 7 goal thriller.

4-2 85' spectacular and possible speculative effort from long range curled to the top right corner
4-3 87' poor back pass intercepted - striker drove in

'Becks' progress to host Ashford Utd in the Preliminary Round; would imagine the crowd should be considerably bigger for that one.

Took a more sedate route back down A233 to M25 jn 6, past Biggin Hill & down onto the A25 via Westerham & Oxted.
- traffic fairly OK carried on past our M3 usual exit (A322) and returned up via Minley/Hawley with a brief stop in the Crown & Cushion - definitely put more stall by their food than their beer. V.popular for families eating out.
Had a half of something - probably the Guest beer - forgotton Blush - wasn't S.Neame which I think is/was their norm and was undrinkable - took it back and got a refill with apologies.

The kids were justifiably cheered to the rafters by a crowd who were only able to buy tickets in a window lasting less than 24 hours, starting just 28 hours before kick off - the sort of thing that would be considerable remarkable elsewhere but is just par for the course with BWFC at the minute!

Entry was largely by [email protected] tickets (I scanned my barcode straight from my phone without a problem), while the ticket office staff deserve massive credit for dealing with such a small window of sales, especially with the ongoing anxiety they must be feeling about their own employment.

Strange that Bolton were not selling tickets until Friday 9th when they had already played their opening league game at Wycombe and so were confident of being able to play the Coventry game. To try and find out more, I had a look at Bolton's official site and there was no explanation. Not only that, it said that tickets would not be available on the day of the match and spectators had to buy on the Friday. Why was this so? No wonder the crowd was the lowest ever recorded for a league match at the new stadium. It's the first time I've ever heard of a financially struggling club not wanting spectators!

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Saltash United 1-2 Clevedon Town (0-0 HT)
Att 157 - Adm 7 - Programme 1 - Coffee 1

An entertaining afternoon at a very windy Kimberley Stadium saw Saltash just come up short in their hopes of causing an upset. This was a very evenly matched contest & despite no goals in the first half both teams had several opportunities. Saltash were the better side in the first part of the second half & created several clear cut opportunities which they should have converted. Clevedon made them pay by taking the lead against the run of play on 70 minutes with a wind assisted 25 yard shot which wrong footed the keeper. The home side equalised straight away from a fantastic free kick 20 yards out on the right edge of the box giving the keeper no chance. Saltash then made a couple of substitutions which appeared to take the sting out of their play but a draw was looking the likely result. That was until the 85th minute when Clevedon winger went on a great run beating at least 2 Saltash players before curling his shot into the top corner beyond the keeper. Saltash never gave up & in added time came very close to an equaliser when it appeared from where I was standing that the ball had crossed the line but due to the Assistant Referee being in a poor position & not up with play, the referee had no option but to say no goal. Kimberley Stadium is one of my favourite grounds the region & despite no changes since last season it was still a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Parkgate 3 v 2 Glasshoughton Welfare NCEL Div 1 Admission 5 Prog 1.50 Coffee/Tea 1 Att 88
Up North visiting the other half's mother in Sunny Scunny, Henfield Bee was also in the area so he picked me up at Parkgate Shopping Centre. Parkgate play next door to Rotherham's training ground a venue Henfield Bee has visited in the past. There is a social club outside the ground and inside is a tea bar and a covered standing and seated area all located behind the near goal, with an elevated standing area on the dug out side. Anyone arriving late missed the first goal, the game kicked off at 2.58 and at 2.59 Glasshoughton were ahead, the home team kicked off and knocked the ball out for a throw in, Glasshoughton took the throw in and took advantage of a hesitant defence to go ahead. The home team were level after 14 minutes scoring from a tight angle and at half time it was 1-1. Parkgate took an early lead in the second half when the away keeper came out too far for a ball that never reached him and the Parkgate forward chipped in. 10 minutes Parkgate claimed the visitors keeper had dropped the ball over the line however none of the match officials agreed and with no VAR it was play on, shortly after this, the visitors equalised and then the home team had a goal disallowed, and with the game entering stoppage time it looked like a draw, however the home team scored a late winner with a shot into the far corner.Noted playing for Parkgate was Player Coach Ben Starosta who played 21 games on loan at Brentford in 2007 - 2008 season.
