Something was happening in 1952, looks a like a swap deal; the City Ground and Trent Bridge for Wilford, which had been rural but was becoming more urban.

Unless I misheard, Reading is in fact England's largest town so why can't this be celebrated in its own right; Next largest town seems to be Dudley, so would it be presumptuous of one of their teams to add a city suffix too? where will it end?! Bit like grade creep...
