CRICKET - ECB National Twenty-20 Competition Can't Post or Reply Privately

Area Finals (28 July) Very poor coverage from ECB/Play-cricket. Presumably Groups 3, 6 and 8 are not finalised yet there's not even an indication of the leagues involved!

Group 1
Billingham Synthonia v Harrogate
Burnmoor v Hanging Heaton

Group 2
Sheffield Collegiate v Bourne
Denby v Cuckney

Group 3

Group 4
Toft v Prestwich
Checkley v Menai Bridge

Group 5
Cranleigh v Hook & Newnham Basics
Sandwich Town v East Grinstead

Group 6

Group 7
Kegworth v Finedon Dolben
Berkswell v Banbury

Group 8

From Bath CC twitter feed the South West group finals (group number?) are at Penzance:

Penzance v Heathcoat
Ammanford v Bath.

Thanks for the info, been checking the ECB website every day for the past week waiting for next Sunday's fixtures to emerge. It looks as if most Area Finals are being staged at the club drawn first but in two groups the Area Finals are being played at completely neutral grounds. Group 2 is being staged at Cleethorpes CC while Group 7 is being staged at Kibworth CC. The first semi-finals in all groups known so far are starting at the very early time of 10am with the second starting at 1pm. Presumably a longer gap until the final to allow the winners of the second semi more time to recover.

Group 8 has finally declared and will take place at the neutral venue of Bury St Edmunds CC:

Swardeston v Stanmore (Middx)
Wanstead & Snaresbrook v Radlett

Both semi-finals listed as 1200 starts so they must be using two different pitches.

Thanks for the info. Wouldn't mind going to the round at Billingham. At present, however, the forecast weather for Teesside doesn't look cricket-friendly.

I see Horwich RMi were talking of a crowd of 1000 for their Bolton League final against Lostock earlier this week.

In Reply To
Group 6 @ Penzance
Penzance v Heathcoat
Ammanford v Bath.

It looks as if Ammanford have decided against the long journey to Penzance and pulled out of the competition leaving a triangular tournament between the remaining three teams.
Revised schedule:
1000 Penzance v Heathcoat
1300 Bath v loser game 1
1600 Bath v winner game 1

Latest forecast looks like the far South West will escape the rain sweeping most of the country as will Cranleigh so those two groups should be completed. As for the other six groups, Billingham has the best chance of being played with rain not forecast until 7pm when they should just about have finished. Sunshine and showers forecast for Cleethorpes so may get some play. Bury St Edmunds, Kibworth, Checkley and Ormskirk - no chance!

According to the fixture list on the competition's play-cricket website, Sunday's Group 4 Area Final is now being played at Toft CC. Group 7 Area Final is now being played this Sunday at Kegworth Town CC. Group 8 Semi-Finals at Swardeston both have 1200 starts so presumably they have two pitches like original hosts Bury St Edmunds.

Swardeston don't have two pitches at The Common but are also using nearby Hilltops both semis start at 1130 not 1200. Final 1530.

Watford FC supporter hence the name also follow Hull FC but rarely get to see either these days.

Have now visited over 800 grounds, progress in recent years has been rather slow and will continue to be as things stand.

As Paul, rightly says ďan impressive doubleĒ for Swardeston. Just a shame there isnít enough weekends in the season to have a 40/50 competition on a Saturday when full strength sides might be available. From what Iíve seen of these Sunday games (in both formats) a lot of clubs can muster 5/6 of their 1st XI for the Sunday, but as Saturday cricket takes all day itís difficult to persuade the players to leave their families on Sunday too.
Swardeston donít have this problem, you sign a contract and itís stated you will be available for both days on most weekends, they are well rewarded and are not allowed to play for Norfolk.
Now the burning question? Does this make the EAPL the strongest league in the Country? Frinton beat Swardeston to the title, but Iím sure the Brummies would argue that their league is still the strongest. I was reading a book written by Bumble the other day, those chaps up there still believe the Lancashire league is still the strongest, but those in the know assured me years ago that this certainly isnít the case. Maybe AV1960 could give us his thoughts on the strongest league these days, certainly one of the more qualified gentlemen to have an opinion.

Re: [youngster] CRICKET - ECB National Twenty-20 Competition [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Even the single men often don't want to play Saturday and Sunday. Some note that they like to have a drink on Saturday night and then spend most of Sunday in bed, others note that they go to work Monday to Friday and want an actual day off on Sunday. They wouldn't tell us even if we asked, but I suspect that Swardeston make it well their players' while to play twice in two days.

That may win you titles, but it leaves you open to other clubs saying things to you like "Oh, so how many of your players live in Swardeston? How many were in that garbage Swardeston Under 13s team that we beat back in the day? How many will be doing the menial tasks at your club twenty years from now?". While it is absolutely allowed in every county except Cheshire and Middlesex, in the south at least the received opinion doesn't really approve of paid players.

I'll be interested to see what AV1960 or others have to say on the strongest league in the country, but a league is not as strong as its best team. It's as strong as the teams that finish halfway. My own club, for instance, since we came 6th out of 10 in Kent this year. 6th in East Anglia was Cambridge CC, and - having seen them this year - my lot wouldn't have much trouble beating Cambridge. It's a while since I've seen any Birmingham League cricket, but I hear that - and just like Lancashire - it's not as strong as it used to be. What's Middlesex like these days? That is another that I would expect to feature in the conversation. Some in the north west like to mention Liverpool and District, although one rather outspoken gentleman with longstanding links to that league doesn't think so.
