FA Trophy/Vase final and National League final Can't Post or Reply Privately

The finals day yesterday again worked brilliantly and has become a great way to finish the non league season. A crowd of 42,000 turned up.

Unfortunately the success of this day comes at the expense of the National League final, especially as Fylde fans had already bought tickets for one Wembley trip. Yesterday would have been the natural day to have the NL final if at Wembley. It would have then give Fylde and Salford an extra week to sell tickets and with the benefit of no other football on to compete against.

The other thing is the cost. It's ridiculous why the NL final is so much more expensive when you even get 2 games for the Trophy and Vase final.

National League final solutions? 1) Wembley unavailable the day before Vase and Trophy finals due to FA Cup, so change the venue to a Midlands ground. Vase and Trophy final works at Wembley because it's a proper cup final and occasion. A National League final is all about promotion and really doesn't need to be at Wembley.

2) Keep it as it is but reduce the prices significantly.

3) Change the Vase and Trophy till the week before and put the NL final to yesterday's date so there's the two weeks after the semi and it's not so rushed. You get a bit of a build up and therefore more tickets sold, if in combination with 2.

The attendance this season might have been as bad as it was because of the size of the two club, as well as the other reasons, s but it needs a big club there now to just make the attendance respectable (i.e. Tranmere last year), or at least southern club who don't need to make extensive travel arrangements at short notice. That's why Boreham Wood at least shifted a few times more then their average gate. Harrogate or Solihull wouldn't have took many either and even Wrexham with only a week to buy tickets wouldn't have took that many given they've multiple Wembley trips fairly recently already.

I've always tried to go to the National League final every year but I won't bother next season if it's the same deal with the prices and rushed play offs because it really dilutes the sense of occasion. The last few Trophy finals have been so much better.

A further factor is club's priorities - an ex league club is likely to be far more interested in promotion than the Trophy but it's maybe less of an distinction for habitual non-leaguers. I fancy if Orient had been in the playoff final they'd have taken far more to that than to a Trophy final the following week. Especially if they'd lost the playoff final - they'd just want the season to end.

The 20 early bird deal for the playoff is good value but it's a gamble. The full prices are a disgrace, though, and the much more cost-effective Non-league finals day proves it.
