It makes no sense what they're even trying to do.

Nothing in football makes any sense.

When I was a little boy I had a board game called 'Wembley', some may remember it, one of the 3/4th div clubs was Gateshead. Although the name means little to me, there is obviously a long history to it, so it must mean something for a few supporters.

I've followed Leamington since I was a little boy, in the days when they were called Lockheed, later AP. When Automotive Products sold the ground, and effectively put the football club out of business, the same could be said of Leamington - no ground, no money, no assets and the team seemed destined to slide into oblivion ending their days struggling at the foot of the Midland Comb, in front of a few supporters. But they were kept going by a few dedicated people and have, metaphorically, risen from the ashes.

Although it means little to most people, it does for a few hundred fans, including me, and that's what matters, even though it doesn't make any sense.

I'm sure the name of Gateshead won't disappear just yet.

No, so why not just sell up to Dunphy who was willing to invest?

If you've got no assets, players, staff, nowhere to play and no fans putting in season ticket money, gate money or merchandise then there's no income there to even fund a groundshare let alone pay any staff. It'll cost a lot of money just to get a groundshare in place and to convince the league (or any league) there's the finances in place to even start the season let alone finish it.

You'd just cut your losses if you were these owners. What are they hanging on for to a club with no assets left?

It's a cash business, that's advantageous to certain types. They won't be the ones picking up the bills once there's nothing left

According to the Cronicle, the National League have given Gateshead until Wednesday to have a host of measures in place. https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/...wednesday-d-16296283

So if Gateshead are kicked out of the league what happens further down the pyramid?

Aldershot would be reinstated in the National League Premier.

Truro are first in line for a Step 2 reprieve. Basingstoke are first in line for a Step 3 reprieve.

There'd be no reprieve at step 3. Any vacancy created at step 3 would be filled by the best non-promoted winner of the step 4 playoffs ('best' being determined by ppg).

Heybridge Swifts would go up to the Isthmian Premier, requiring other movements, probably Bishop's Stortford to SLPC and Kings Langley back to SLPS. Perhaps this is why Ladderman has been very quiet lately...
I presume Step 4 would reprieve someone – Molesey, I think – and move one or two others around.

That's why the expulstion of Gateshead is being seen by the National League as a last resort. They don't want to reprieve Truro City.

Why the Anti-Truro sentiment? Is it due to the ground issues?

There's not much to say.
We seem destined to be shunted around for the rest of eternity without any thought about what it does to our club.
What happens if Gateshead are just kicked into the NPL?
