Former York City caretaker manager and centre forward Kevin Randall has died at the age of 73.

Randall played 118 times for the Minstermen and scored 31 goals between 1977 and 1981 after signing in an £8,000 move from Mansfield Town.

Joining City at the age of 32, Randall enjoyed a dream debut when he scored both goals during a 2-1 fourth division triumph over Doncaster Rovers.

In 1980, he combined playing with youth team coach duties at Bootham Crescent before becoming assistant manager to Barry Lyons.

He then took charge of the first team for three months following Lyons’ departure in December 1981 but only managed to win one of the 11 matches during his tenure.

Barry Swallow subsequently assumed caretaker duties before Denis Smith became Lyons’ permanent successor that summer.

Born in Ashton under Lyne, Randall will be remembered as a prolific lower division marksman, having racked up 171 career strikes in 555 appearances for City, Bury, Chesterfield, Notts County and Mansfield.

He also went on to have a stint as Chesterfield boss between 1987 and 1988 and was later assistant manager to John Duncan when the Spireites reached the 1997 F.A. Cup semi-finals.

The Derbyshire Times carried an obituary in which he was described as "a kind man". That's no bad way to be remembered.

I recall him as a prolific goalscorer with several local clubs and was fortunate to be a spectator at Notts County's last home game of the 1972-73 season in which in front of a crowd of 23,613 County beat Ron Yeats' Tranmere Rovers 4-1 to clinch promotion to what is now the Championship.

Kevin Randall scored twice that day, two penalties, one in each half. As I was stood just behind and to the side of one goal I had a close up view of one of them. Jimmy Sirrel had put together a very strong side, of which Randall was a key member, which easily held its own in the division above.

He was admired and respected on and off the field.
