2021 Rugby League World Cup Can't Post or Reply Privately

Venues for the 2021 World Cup (men's, women's and wheelchair) were announced in Manchester this morning.

Headlines include: Old Trafford has the men's and women's finals (Nov 27); St James' Park, Newcastle, has the opening ceremony (Oct 23); Arsenal FC's Emirates Stadium is a host venue (for one of the men's semi-finals, it seems); new stadia at Workington and York stage games (the latter only in the women's comp).

A condition of government funding was most venues being in the so-called Northern Powerhouse. Non-heartlands venues include Bolton (University of Bolton Stadium), Copper Box Arena, London (wheelchair comp), Coventry (Ricoh Arena), Liverpool (Anfield), Middlesbrough (Riverside Stadium) and Sheffield (Bramall Lane and English Institute of Sport). Oddly, there won't be any games of any description in Wigan (Leigh - Wigan Borough - notwithstanding). Doncaster (Keepmoat Stadium) gets three matches, it appears. The first training base revealed will be in Preston.

Yes, that's all good. As a York resident (for now, at least), I'm disappointed the rugby league club's new stadium will host only women's matches.

Is the Workington Community Stadium on the list on the understanding that it is built by then? Having a SF at Arsenal will suit the Australians, no doubt the schedule will ensure that their SF is in the capital.

I assume so. AFAIK, the planning application hasn't been submitted yet! It's supposed to be submitted some time this winter.

As always with these things, the artist's impressions of the proposed stadium look very nice. It's going to be on the site of Workington FC's Borough Park ground and also on the former site of Lonsdale Park dog track (Workington FC played a handful of games there in, I think, 1987). The latter site is prone to flooding. They're talking about a 15m bill for an 8,000 capacity, a mixture of seats and terracing, along with a synthetic pitch. Completion is planned by spring 2021. So goes the blurb from PR drones.

If Workington use the same building company as Tottenham then it definitely won't be ready. With such a long list of stadiums selected then losing one won't be much of a issue.

It would be good to keep three games in Cumbria, where the sport needs a boost. Trouble is, the county doesn't have a single decent stadium. I know they've tinkered with Brunton Park, Carlisle, but its facilities are still reminiscent of football's Fourth Division era. None of the other population centres has a stadium worthy of the name: Barrow (two dumps), Kendal (one new but both tiny), Penrith (one a dump, the other tiny), Whitehaven (a dump), Workington (three dumps). If the new stadium in Workington isn't ready in time, the three games scheduled for Cumbria may have to be played elsewhere.

All the allocated games at the 2021 RLWC that were allocated to Workington have been moved to Kingston Park in Newcastle.
