They annouced in April that 7 of 13 UK stores were closing; that list didn't include Leeds which occupied quite a prime site ( old Lewis's building) but which has also closed within the last month.
Always found it a bit of a strange store, never quite sure what it's market was.

Every town I visit, has a B and M, Pound land, Home Bargains, Pound World. ALDI and LIDL are everywhere now. soon every shop would just be these. We should only panic once these shops go out of business.

The high street clothing chain Jaeger has gone into administration, putting 680 jobs at risk.

Knowing the dress-sense of most hoppers, I doubt that this is a retail chain that is on the radar of many on this forum. More seriously, it looks to be another example of poor leadership from the top.
For me, the most amazing line in this rather predictable news article is the one that goes...
"Last week Better Capital sold Jaeger's debt to a company understood to be controlled by the retail billionaire Philip Day, who heads Edinburgh Woollen Mill." !!!
I worked in retail for twenty years, and still cannot get my head around how Edinburgh Woollen Mill makes the profits it does, takes over rivals in the way it does, and maintains the High Street presence it does. 10,000 employees and a pre-tax profit of over £91million in the year to 2015 is quite amazing for a shop that (from my experience) sells little more than tatty tartan car-blankets, short-sell-by fudge and seems totally unable to wash its shop windows.

Edinburgh Woolen Mill seem to have outlets in most garden centres. So people can buy overpriced Tartan blankets after they have purchased overpriced garden furniture and had an overpriced tea and cake. Go to Wilko and B&M's instead, they sell the same crap but at a much lower price.
Don't EWM own Peacocks cheap and almost cheerful. The problem is it's snobbery why would anyone in their right mind buy anything from Bicester Shopping Village, yet there are miles and miles of tailbacks to get into the place. Someone said a Polo shirt from Bicester last 2 or 3 times as long as one from Primark, hope it does it's ten times the price for the label.

Marks & Spencer are to close six stores: two of their smaller Simply Food outlets (one near York, and one in Worksop), and more worryingly four larger shops in Portsmouth, Slough, Warrington and Wokingham. Apparently they're looking to open another 36 shops, but I'd bet most (if not all) of these will be the smaller Simply Food shops that have been pretty successful for them.

The one due to close in Portsmouth is in the city centre's main Commercial Road shopping precinct. Since the Gunwharf shopping development opened in 2001 on the site of the old HMS Vernon navy base, Commercial Road has suffered greatly from shop closures, while what is left there is increasingly of the £1-shop of mobiles-unlocked variety. When M&S leaves the street, it really will be the death-knell for the place as a shopping destination, with only Debenhams left (another chain looking to close shops around the country soon).
On the radio shortly after this news broke, I heard a councilor from Warrington being interviewed. He expressed sadness that M&S were leaving his town centre, but was unable to give a proper answer when the reporter pointed out that if his local council hadn't built so many out-of-town shopping parks on the edge of Warrington, maybe the town centre would be in the predicament it is now. Warrington has a stubbornly high rate of vacant shops in its town centre, despite being a relatively wealthy town for its region.

I'm so glad to see Richer Sounds at the top of that list - I bought myself a new stereo there two year ago, and the service was very good indeed, as was the price. The staff knew what they were talking about, but at no point were they pushy towards any high-commission brands (if they have them). A far cry from the sort of service you'll get at Dixons or Currys.
At the bottom end... as mentioned on earlier posts on this thread, in the space of a dozen years Morrisons have gone from being a well-run family-owned regional supermarket into an absolute basketcase. Despite this, I still bet the twats at the top pay themselves vastly more than the management at Richer Sounds.

Soon to be 'toys were us'? I won't miss them, found their security arrangements ridiculously over the top with everyone being seen as a potential shoplifter.
As for Maplins, just way to expensive. Much of what they do can be purchased far cheaper online including delivery and they're the only company I know of who charge for their catalogue.
I feel for the staff involved but not either company.

My local store being one of them. Not somewhere I really shop, only get dragged through by the wife. Occasionally bought their '2 Dine for £10' meal and wine offer, which can be good value. I do feel for some of the staff. I worked there in the mid 1990s and some of the people I worked with then are still there now. Apparently they were only told of the impending closure the day it was announced on the news.

I actually sympathise with WH Smith a little with this survey - one article I've read says that the main complaints people had tended to be about crowded shops and other people getting in their way (a couple of points that WH Smith can only do a certain amount about - many of their shops are in busy locations, and if someone decides to buy their copy of NLP at Waterloo station at 6pm just before their train departs, they really shouldn't be that surprised if things take longer than they want... though then being offered a giant bar of chocolate that they don't want ain't going to improve their mood either, I suppose). There is certainly plenty they could do to improve matters, but WH Smith is always going to be an easy target for people contributing to a survey like this, just the same as a shop like LUSH is always going to do really well,. However, I can tell you now which of those two retailers I find infinitely the more useful.
I'm surprised that the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury's haven't come out of this with a bit more of a kicking - I find their Metro and Local shops a woeful experience. And don't get me started on mobile phone shops.
