Another Royal Wedding Can't Post or Reply Privately

I am so happy for the young couple. Thanks to them we might get an extra Bank Holiday and if it's an afternoon wedding then we might just get some 11am kick offs.

Bless

If I recall - from history and not memory - the last time English royalty tried to
shack up with an American divorcée it all ended rather messy...

Re: [DonQuixote] Another Royal Wedding [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

If I recall from Google Search =

''The last time a senior royal wanted to marry an American divorcee, it sparked a constitutional crisis and rocked the British monarchy to the core.
King Edward VIII - Prince Harry's great-great-uncle - abdicated over his love for Wallis Simpson in 1936.
The womanising royal met Mrs Simpson when she was still married to her second husband Ernest in 1931.
They began an affair and he became besotted with her.
He acceded to the throne in January 1936 after George V died and seven months later Mrs Simpson filed for divorce from her husband.
Neither the royal court, the government nor the church would accept a twice-divorced American as queen.
Edward VIII pushed for a morganatic marriage where his wife would have no claim on his rights, but the government would not accept this and the king decided to abdicate, leaving his brother the Duke of York - the Queen's father - to take over as George VI.
Edward became the Duke of Windsor and went into exile abroad.
The pair eventually wed in June 1937.''

Thanks to the Birmingham Mail.

Thankfully times have changed. Although I suspect the third 'Cambridge' child is to make sure a 'Harry' heir has a very limited chance of becoming monarch. Indeed it's expected that their offspring will not receive the HRH style and be known as 'Lord' or 'Lady'.

The lucky couple are reportedly going to become the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Edward and Sophie are already announced as becoming Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, after both Philip and the Queen have died.

And, of course, at that point, the Cambridges will become the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Surely the only difference was that they had French, Dutch, Spanish, and Danish blood before then. All European royalty married into other royal families for political reasons and because there was no choice as marriage to commoners was not usually acceptable.
Therefore all royal families were partly foreign. Bit like most Western European football teams!

It 's good he's been allowed to import his bride from outside the EEA. Anyone earning less than £18k is not allowed to do this.

Isn't the last 'English' monarch Queen Elizabeth I & she died in 1603. So that's over 500 years ago! Isn't she just a descendant of a Norman French dynasty anyway, so when was the last truly 'English' monarch? Even before 1066 the Monarchs were Anglo-Saxons, so it then goes back to pre-Roman times.

No one can argue that the Stuart's were a Scottish Dynasty & Hanover/Saxe-Coburg & Gotha/Windsor are a German Dynasty. Isn't the current Stuart claimant a German called Franz?

Will James Hewitt be invited to the wedding? It is extremely important that one's biological father is invited! Failure to do so will cause great offence.

I love the way royalists always come up with the worst possible scenario when nominating a President.

It used to be Tony Blair.
