Wigtown & Bladnoch - gone? Can't Post or Reply Privately

It is reported on P&B that Wigtown & Bladnoch have withdrawn from all competitions for 2017-18.
Which explains their mysterious absence from this morning's Scottish Cup draw.
The SoSFL becomes a 15-team league.
Nothing on any of their official e-prescences, so that's as much as I know at the moment - unclear whether 'just' abeyance for this season, or more serious than that...

Suggestion made elsewhere is that it is due to lack of quality players, having lost a number of their squad from last season.

WIGTOWN OUT OF SOUTH LEAGUE BUT HOPE TO FIGHT BACKFootball 11-07-2017
ONE of the oldest clubs in the region has been forced to drop out of the South of Scotland League just three weeks before the start of the new season.

Wigtown and Bladnoch management and committee has been trying desperately to recruit players without success.
They have notified the South League that they won’t be competing this season and also all but one of the South Cup competitions.
Wigtown have also been forced to drop out of the prestigious William Hill Scottish Cup which was drawn yesterday (MON).
Jim Brown, secretary of the club which dates back to 1880 and plays at Trammondford Park at Wigtown, said they had been unable to recruit players despite the desperate efforts of manager Micky Dougan.
He added: “Most of last year’s team have joined other clubs such as Stranraer, St Cuthbert Wanderers, Newton Stewart and junior side Maybole.
We are hoping to play the Challenge Cup this coming season and that we can return next season. Michael tried his best but he couldn’t get them to sign.
“We want to try and build over the coming year, get started earlier and get some boys together. Basically, it’s been a domino effect for once you lose five or six players the others begin to lose heart as well.”
Wigtown have won five championships since the South of Scotland Football League was re-formed in 1946, the latest being in2014/15 when they won their first ever back to back league titles.
Last season they finished runners-up to champions Edusport Academy after leading the table for long spells.

The rulebook says "Participation in the Challenge Cup shall be mandatory for all clubs in membership of the Southern Counties FA". i.e. including those in abeyance, in order to maintain their membership.
Wigtown got a bye into R2 of the Southern Counties Challenge Cup which will be in January. The R1 ties are due Friday 1st / Saturday 2nd December.
Despite being in abeyance, Fleet Star had to put together an XI to fulfill their (away) fixture in it last season, so Wigtown (and Fleet Star?) would be looking to do the same this January. Worth paying attention to the R2 draw when it is made, for those of us who haven't yet done them at Home.

SoSFL and EoSFL websites' fixture lists, which get frequently updated, continue to include Wigtown & Bladnoch v Gala Fairydean Rovers amongst the South Region Challenge Cup fixtures of Saturday 16th September. 3pm at Trammondford Park.

This Wigtown home fixture will not now occur.
They had intended to pull an XI together for it, perhaps confusing the South Region Challenge Cup for the Southern Counties Challenge Cup which is the one that they are obliged to participate in. R2 of that, due January, is not yet drawn so that might be Away anyway.

Wigtown & Bladnoch got a HOME draw in the Southern Counties FA Challenge Cup R2 - their one match of this season (unless they win it).
Saturday 20th January 2pm at Trammandford Park, vs Lochmaben.

Wigtown have arranged a friendly against near neighbours Newton Stewart this Wednesday night, presumably to prepare whatever side they've got together for the Southern Counties tie next week.

It seems that the game is taking place on Newton Stewart's artificial pitch at Blairmount Park

Whilst on the one hand disappointing that it's not at Trammandford Park, it saves me having to book a taxi for the last leg, since the nearest I can get by public transport before 2pm is to Newton Stewart at 13:45, as long as I'm oot ma bed at 6am and my train into Glasgow isn't running late - only 13mins to get from Queen Street to Central. The return journey will see me miss my last train, but a Night Bus will get me to my bed at 2am.

Newton Stewart v QoTS on the same 3G is OFF tonight - frozen snow.
Pitch inspection Saturday morning for the Wigtown game. "Will need a weather change" but the forecast is sleet then no warmer than +2 and cloudy until KO.
Doesn't sound hopeful... Frown

There will be very little on tomorrow in Central and Southern Scotland apart from the on the east coast. That applies to plastic as well as grass.

Rearranged for Saturday 10th Feb. Again on Newton Stewart's plastic (so their game again goes to the Friday night). 3pm this time though. Makes me getting there in time for KO a bit easier, but getting back a nightmare!

It was confirmed at the recent South of Scotland League AGM that Wigtown and Bladnoch are returning for 2018/19. No other changes in League membership.

Changed to the 30th. Not necessarily at Trammondford Park, either. Venue to be confirmed.
