Qatar Can't Post or Reply Privately

With the ongoing situation in Qatar is this a get-out opportunity for FIFA to move the 2022 World Cup. Currently a number of neighboring countries have cut all ties with Qatar, there are large closures of air space to Qatar Airways around the region and it's only land border with Saudi Arabia is closed. Qatari nationals are being told to leave Saudi, Egypt, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Libya and Yemen and nationals of those countries living or in Qatar have 14 days to leave. Without people from these countries construction work is slow and access to materials will also be effected..

Should this situation continue then there could be a situation where one of the above countries qualifies for the WC in 2022 but wouldn't be permitted to attend due a ban on players, officials and supporters from those countries.

There is only 5 years before the 2022 WC so could it be moved? To keep it in the region would leave Japan, South Korea and China as the only possible hosts.

Japan host the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Olympics and they might not want the expense of hosting another major event, although the stadiums and infrastructure are already in place so the costs would be low.

South Korea have a few stadiums, not sure they have the number required by FIFA and the infrastructure is in place but current issues with their northern neighbours might put off FIFA.

China have the stadiums or can build them quickly but the infrastructure is lacking but they do want to host a WC.

FIFA could look to North America with either Mexico, USA or Canada or a combination of those stepping in to host the WC in 2022, North America will host in WC in 2026 so this would just bring it forward 4 years.

What will FIFA do with Qatar? Based on previous history they will probably bury their heads in the sand and hope everything will be OK. They they are going to do something then they must act now, while there is still enough time move the 2022 WC.

You have to hope FIFA have well-advanced contingency plans. They may well need them.

Who would have guessed handing the World Cup finals to Qatar might not have turned out to be such a great idea.

A good cough and a blow in a hanky should sort it out.
A few years ago, I watched a game in Belgium where all the players were Flemish and the officials were Qatari.

Re: [Tykeoldboy] Qatar [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

For various reasons, it seems that FIFA needs or wants the following three world cups to be held in USA, England and China - not necessarily in that order.

It makes sense to pass the 2022 World Cup to the one of those three most able to host in 5 years, regardless of the continent they are on.

But, it is vital that it is a quick decision, because the world footballing calendar for 2021-22 and 2022-23 will be locked down soon and they need to confirm a winter World Cup within those plans.

The unspoken rule is that the World Cup (& the Olympics) goes to the country with the worst human rights record, or who are interfering in the Middle East. So Russia and Qatar are quite safe then.

In the last few hours 4 more countries have cut diplomatic relations with Qatar.

Wales certainly have the stadiums, sadly half of those have capacity of less than 5000, although a WC SF in Rhyl would do wonders for tourist trade at Golden Sands

In reality, England could host it tomorrow by having 10 good stadium ready with over 40k capacity:

Wembley
Emirates
London Stadium
Villa Park
Hillsbrough
St James Park
Stadium of Light
Anfield
Etihad
Old Trafford

Plus by 2022 likely to have:
New White Hart Lane
New Stamford Bridge
New Goodison
KP Leicester expanded to 42k

Plus others that could easily be:
Derby
Southampton
Leeds (might be of capacity, but a hole)
Middlesbrough
Wolves
Hull

Certainly don't need Wales or Scotland but could include them if it gives them a chance of appearing in a World Cup :)

Or hold it in the UK, if it's still around.

Might be more to FIFA's taste than just holding it in England.

There is a thought in my mind that if Qatar and Saudi Arabia are not in agreement with each other, then maybe the Qataris are doing something right!
The guardian has commented on the World cup there, but is comes to no conclusions
https://www.theguardian.com/...ockade-fifa-football

The Guardian mentions that Qatar sponsors FIFA through the recent Qatari Airlines deal - a deal which effectively killed off any lasting speculation that the 2022 WC was going to be moved
The same vehicle is of course used to sponsor Barcelona
I am not aware of other clubs sponsored by the airline, except the Saudi club, Al-Alhi who cut their ties following this weeks news.

The Qataris indirectly sponsor European football through the BeIN sports network, a subsidary of Al Jazeera
BeIn holds most football rights for viewing in France
It also shows French, Spanish and Italian football in the USA, along with Football League championship.
They also hold some European and MLS rights in South East Asia.

My first thought is that if Qatar is indeed removed as hosts will Sepp Blatter be asked to give the money back?

Actually, Blatter had promised the 2022 to USA and was surprised when Qatar bought it.
He did not realise that many of his executive committee were honest enough to actually support the candidate that had bribed them

Re: [leohoenig] Qatar [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

A few years ago, I launched a petition to give the 2022 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Both of these countries have hosted major sporting events - International Cricket, The Rugby World Cup in 2003 and currently New Zealand is hosting the British & Irish Lions.

Australia have big enough stadiums in the following:

Stadium Australia - Sydney
Docklands Stadium - Melbourne
Lang Park - Brisbane
Subiaco Oval - Perth

The following grounds could be improved, if necessary:

Oval - Adelaide
Willows Sporting Complex - Townsville

New Zealand stadiums could include:

Eden Park - Auckland
Forsyth Barr Stadium - Dunedin
Westpac Stadium - Wellington

The following grounds could be improved, if necessary:

Rugby League Park - Christchurch
Rotoura International Stadium - Rotoura
Waikato Stadium - Hamilton

I recall sending letters about this to the FA, Stonewall and FSF but got no response. Hey ho. If anybody would be interested in forwarding on this idea to people with 'clout' then by all means feel free.

Qatar is a boil which needs lancing.

The problem with hosting a WC in Australia and New Zealand is that both countries belong to different confederations. I don't think FIFA would approve of such a radical idea.
