I think you have to be a Catholic to be a saint!

There are also C of E saints. I was very surprised to find that someone on my ancestral tree had been made a Saint in 2001, some 120 years after he died.

Technically, if it's post-Reformation (or thereabouts), they're commemorated as heroes or martyrs, not saints.

The only person to have specifically been made a saint by the C of E since the Reformation (and this is itself contested and certainly not accepted by all or even most Anglicans) is Charles I, the Blessed Martyr King.

Re: [Chris M] RIP Roger Moore [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

As someone whose family is riddled with C of E vicars, bishops, etc [and I am married to one] I quote below -

"On 24 November 2001 at its Synod ..... announced a Calendar of Saints. It was stated that while "all Christians are called to be holy" (1 Peter 1 v 15) over the centuries the Christian Church has recognised or 'canonised' people of great holiness, sometimes by a formal process and sometimes by popular acclamation or local custom. The Calendar of Saints now includes the names of people who, while not being 'recognised' nationally or internationally, have lived lives of holiness which have enriched the life of the church."

One of those included in this Calendar was my great great grandfather, who besides being a vicar was a well-known social reformer.

Re: [pitch 63] RIP Roger Moore [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Yes, but not all people in the Calendar of Saints are Saints in the formal sense, primarily because we no longer (and have no actual process to) canonise anyone. Hence why only those formally canonised prior to the break with Rome are ever specifically referred to as Saints (and even then, no one in the Calendar of Saints is actually called a Saint within, nor do all observances within it commemorate saints e.g. Ash Wednesday), nor is anyone included post-reformation celebrated specifically on a Holy Day or Festival, only a commemoration.

They may be saints with a small-s, but they're not Saints.

There are interesting articles on the subject here and here.

Surely the disciples and the Virgin Mary were all Jewish as was Jesus himself.

From an interview 4 years ago -

"I’m not a huge football fan to be honest – I enjoy the big games and the excitement around them though. ...... When I saw some of the transfer deals on the news, and how much some football players get today, it made me wish I hadn’t got such flat feet."
