Victor Lindelof signed for Benfica from Swedish club Vasteras three years ago for 60,000, with a 250,000 sell on clause based on appearances.

The sell on clause should have now kicked in, but it's three years on and Lindelof has signed a new contract and Benfica are saying the sell on applied only to the original contract and they don't have to pay. The Swedes, unsurprisingly, disagree.

No doubt Benfica could afford this many times over but if they win it could have far wider implications ...

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Clubs can get ripped off on these sell on clauses. A few years back Brentford sold Michael Turner to Hull with a sell on clause. Turner was being quoted at 4-6 Million when he moved to Sunderland. Paul McShane moved the other way and was being quoted as for sale at 1.5 million at the time. Hull turned round and said it was a straight swop and no money changed hands so Brentford did not receive a penny from the deal.
