Can't help with the finals but do you know that the competition was previously known as the Grays and Tilbury Cup, being renamed in March 1946?

Re: [bmccoll] Essex Thames-side Challenge Trophy [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

hi, didn't know there was a connection between the two competitions - thanks - although thinking of it, are you 100% on that records show that Tilbury were losing finalists in the 1950-51 Grays and Tilbury Cup - you're not thinking of it being a re-naming to maybe the Essex Elizabethan Trophy or Essex Floodlight Trophy?
I did have a good two page history of the trophy once but don't know where to find it! it did mention that in the 60s one season only two clubs played for it!
writing of re-used trophies, if anyone's interested, the ESL Championship trophy is the old Pearson Charity Cup that Colchester and Chelmsford used to play for.
looking at Grays Athletic's website this week they claim to have won the Thames-side during 1978-79 but a handbook I have says competition abandoned! either more ficticious honours or they have their Essex cups mixed up!

From the Essex Newsman, 8 March 1946,

"The Grays and Tilbury Cup Competition has been re-named the Essex Thames-side Challenge. The draw for the first round is: Grays Athletic v Leyton; Clapton v Walthamstowe Avenue; Leytonstone v Ilford; Romford v Barkin. Leytonstone and Barking play their tie on March 16."

Is it possible the G/T Cup was later resurrected as a separate competition?

for those interested, the competition started off as two separate cups - the Essex Thames-side Senior Cup and Junior Cup (for reserve sides).

the 'stones handbook says their reserves won it in 1951-52, 1952-53, and 1955-56.

missing details needed now is:

1947-48 Grays vs. ?
1950-51 Leytonstone vs. ?
1961-62 score for Walthamstow vs. Grays
1964-65 score for Leyton vs. Leytonstone
1965-66 score for Leytonstone vs. Ilford
1966-67 score for Leyton vs. Leytonstone
1967-68 Leytonstone vs. ?
1970-71 Ilford vs. ?
1971-72 Walthamstow vs. ?
1976-77 Walthamstow vs. ?
1977-78 score for Walthamstow vs. Clapton
1979-80 Aveley vs. ?
1980-81 score for Grays vs. Basildon
2002-03 was competition completed - S/F held over to 2003-04 ?

thank you.

More importantly, who has got the trophy?

Worth more than a few decent holidays to the Maldives I'd wager...

FA Vase semi programme wanted: 2001 Taunton v Clitheroe.

Will double check these when I get time but hope this helps....

47-8 Grays v Barking
50-1 Leytonstone v Romford
51-2 Romford v Leytonstone (replay held over until following season).

Am I correct in thinking this competition was by invitation only in its formative years?

And I still want to know who's got the Trophy....

thank you.

another problem here then - 47-48 - went to Barking website - they say they lost 0-2 at home to Romford in the semi-final on 15th April - this leaves a Stones vs. Romford final ???
don't worry - cup and Stones handbooks both say the Stones won it in 1950 but it appears Ilford won it!

trophy is it its usual place - a bank vault!

early participation was by the top eight clubs in the area - Leytonstone, Ilford, Walthamstow Avenue, Clapton, Romford, Grays Athletic, Barking and Leyton.

I've got Romford progs going back to 1929 so give me a day or two and I will
have a delve into my files....just checked my lists and I've got a fair few of ETT
games and with old Boro progs being pretty comprehensive, there may be
a list of other teams' results over time.

Watch this space.

1947/8 - 28/4/48 Grays Athletic 5-1 Romford (at Barking)
1961/2 - 3/3/48 Grays Athletic 0-1 Walthamstow Avenue (query about date, as I have them playing Ilford in the semi on 10/4/62)
1980/1 - 10/5/81 Grays Athletic 2-1 (aet) Basildon United

Don't think 2002/3 competition was completed.

Outstanding finals

1950-51 Leytonstone vs. Romford

1964-65 Leyton vs. Leytonstone

1965-66 Leytonstone vs. Ilford

1966-67 Leyton vs. Leytonstone

1970-71 Ilford vs. ?

1971-72 Walthamstow Avenue vs. ?

1976-77 Walthamstow Avenue vs. ?

1979-80 Aveley vs. ?

Queries

1949-50 was it Ilford 3-2 Romford, or, as per ETT handbooks and Leytonstone FC handbooks, won by Leytonstone?

1975-76 was it ‘no competition’ – as per ETT handbooks, or, competition not completed (reason?) as I’ve been told?

1978-79 was it ‘competition not completed’ – as per ETT handbooks, or, did Grays Athletic win it – as claimed on their website?

2002-03 was this ‘not completed’ (due to fixture congestion)? (semi-finals held over to new season, one semi-final played, but did it conclude? (Maldon Town vs. Ford United or Canvey Island)

61-62 Final played on 3/5/62.
Grays only played one match in the competition in 78-79 beating Hornchurch at home 5-3 in the 1st Round.

I can fill in a few gaps:

1964/5 Leytonstone 1 Leyton 2

1966/7 Leytonstone 4 Leyton 2
Leyton awarded a walkover in the S/F against Dagenham or Grays Athletic.

1975/6 There was certainly a start to the competition as Leyton & Leytonstone drew 1 - 1 in the 1st round, with Stones winning the reply 3 - 0.

hi, thanks for the info.

two questions arise, 1) the 66/67 final, 'Stones say they were losing finalists and the ETT handbook says Leyton beat them. Can you confirm either way? - 4-2 to Leyton or the 'Stones? thank you.
2) 1975-76 - thanks for confirming the competition started. can you - or anyone - remember if that was a bad winter, weather-wise, or was it abandoned due to a fixture pile-up?

thank you.

The weather roundup for that year looks pretty good, at least as far as football matches are concerned.

"1975/76 (Winter):
For England and Wales (using the Met Office EWR/EWP series), it was one of the six DRIEST winters in the previous 100 years, and the third consecutive season with less rain than usual: summer and autumn 1975 were also dry. Winter 1975/76 had around 61% of average rainfall over England and Wales. It was this persistence of low precipitation, particularly throughout the winter 're-charge' season, that led to the severe DROUGHT problems encountered in 1976"

"1976 (Spring):
Less than 50% of normal RAINFALL in the south-east of England during spring: contributing to the ensuing problems during the SUMMER DROUGHT."

Sorry Statto

As a Leyton supporter I should have known better. Leyton did win 4 - 2 . It was almost the last game played by the team assembled by Ted Hardy, who had just gone off to Dagenham. We lost 10 of the 11 for the start of the new season.

The problem with 1975/6 was not the weather, I do not recall a single game being postponed. The problem was too many fixtures. Apart from the league, FA Cup, FA Vase, London Senior, Essex Senior, Thameside Trophy, Mithras Cup, Essex Floodlight League and the Premier Midweek League.

That season we played 30 league games and 29 cup and Mickey Mouse League games.
