4th substitue to be trialed Can't Post or Reply Privately

The use of a 4th substitute is to be trialed at the 2016 Olympics. it will also be trialed at the Women U20 World Cup in November and the World Club Cup. The use of the 4th substitute will only be allowed during extra time, so a team that uses all 3 subs during normal time and then loses a player to injury will still have to play with 10 players until the game goes into extra time.

The feeling of utter devastation when you pick up your mug and realise you already finished your tea.

Just have rolling subs and be done with it...works well enough at
our Sunday League level - just handy to have if needs must etc....

I wonder if the number of players willing in the pro game to "take one for the team" and, at the cost of a booking, by a "professional foul" end an opponent's move, is increased by the knowledge that the yellow carded player can be replaced by someone with a clean slate.

Maybe we should think about not allowing a booked player to be substituted, and if leaving the game through injury not be replaced.

Or anyone booked be sin binned for 30 minutes, with a booking within the final half hour automatically becoming a red card instead.

Anyone have thoughts about what to do about "someone taking one for the team"?

With rolling subs, I'd be concerned about moving towards "specialist" players, as in American Football. Teams could have a specialist penalty taker on the bench, who is only brought on if a pen is awarded. Or long throw specialists, who only come on if there is a throw-in in the final third. Or teams could bring on 3 extra defenders when defending a corner in the last 5 minutes. I can see the game being held up with interminable substitutions depending on what is happening in the game at any one time. Teams, especially those higher up with greater resources, could get very canny about "managing" a game in this way, and the game would be ruined as a spectacle.

I think the rolling subs would be that you can utilise a maximum of 14 players throughout the game, with any 11 of those on the pitch at one time. Not tha you have 11 starters, 7 subs and be able to use all 7 subs!

When I have been to French games with rolling subs, a 14 player squad limit appears to be the rule. However, in the last Cheshire League division 2 game I have seen (two seasons ago), one team played 6 substitutes, and made 8 substitutions. If the objective is to give all of the players a run out, so as they stay involved, I do not know if three minutes on the pitch (as the last sub had) really counts, or coming on as a sub at HT, and going off again (if not injured) at 71.

In Germany this season, I had not realised in advance that rolling subs would be used. The teams named five, and looking at past results showed only three being used (and only one entry time), but the first sub came on while an injured player was treated, followed by a reverse substitution three minutes later. Still, both teams played only 14 of their 16 named players, making around 7 or 8 changes each.

AFA football allows repeat subs but with a limit of 14 in total. It's the same across all of the affiliated competitions (partly because several of the cup competitions no longer have their own rule book and simply refer to AFA cup rules).

Sometimes I wonder how we managed to get from 1872 to 1967 without substitutes.

It's only a case of making sure only upto 3 players with numbers over 11 are on the pitch... the game stops for a substitution, surely.

And counting teams not making more than 14 subs. Can just imagine it , ref I've only made 13 !

Haven't they enough to do.
Hope games are stopped over here , but with unlimited subs they weren't in N America.

Heard they are trailing taking time keeping completely off refs , but suppose that's easy as well to keep his eye on.

It was 14 players, not 14 subs (as I understand it). That would be too much for the officials to handle, unless they use a 4th official.

Presumably a team has a limit on the number of substitutions they can make.

And the ref would need to ensure they don't exceed this.

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Repeat substitutions with up to 5 subs able to be switched on and off at any time has been used at a lot of lower league games for a couple of years now and seems to work very well. I must have seen about 50 games using it and not once have I seen it be abused for either timewasting purposes or to put on a specialist player.

I would really like to see this brought in, perhaps to steps 5-7 next.
