Lack of NL sides in FAC third round... Can't Post or Reply Privately

So, only Eastleigh have survived this season...must be a long time
since only one side made it thus far...

From memory, I think 1950/1 was the last time that no NL sides
reached said stage - please don't ask why I should know that...Crazy

Play-off programmes wanted: 2004 Basingstoke v Lewes. 2005 Droylsden v Kettering, Maldon v Barking, Maldon v Uxbridge. 2006 Brackley v Marlow, Kendal v Stocksbridge. 2007 Paulton v Taunton, Tooting v Hastings. 2008 Didcot v Oxford City, Tooting v Worthing, Sheffield v Stocksbridge. 2009 East Thurrock v Concord, Ilkeston v Kendal, Nantwich v Guiseley, Stocksbridge v Carlton. 2014 Tiverton v Paulton. 2015 Darlington v Bamber Bridge.

FA Vase semis wanted: 1975 Hoddesdon v Friar Lane. 1978 Barton v Hungerford. 2001 Taunton v Clitheroe.

FA Trophy programmes wanted: 1969-70 Any round from first season. Have many but plenty of gaps still to fill.

Maybe the FA Cup is having one of those seasons when the expected happens. I'm sure the newspapers will jump on this and say the FA Cup as lost it's magic. Back in 2008 when only 1 PL team reached the semi final (first time in about 100 years) the press said the PL teams aren't interested in the FA Cup but a few years later Wigan win it and the Cup is magic again.

2015/16 just might be one of those seasons with very few unexpected results and the draw going the way of PL teams meaning non PL teams go out earlier.

Down here on the South coast we don't know what is the bigger shock - that only one NL club has reached the 3rd round (first time since the late 1960s according to "The Times") or that it should be my club, Eastleigh. We've only been around since 1946 and spent most of that time in the Hampshire League. Eastleigh only reached the first round proper of the cup for the first time as recently as 2009, losing at Barrow.

Looking forward to what should be a record crowd (presently just over 4,000 for a league game)
at the Silverlake for the visit of Bolton Wanderers in January.

And with they way Bolton are playing this season with their on going problems, Eastleigh must fancy their chances of getting to the 4th Round.

Someone will have the year-by-year stats. 3 NL in R3 and 1 in R4 about the commonest permutation I reckon. 2 in R4 pretty rare - once in mid-70s (Leatherhead and Tooting?), once a few years ago.

The supplementary question is how many have reached the 3rd Round from a purely NL "group"
i.e. NL "A" beats NL "B" in 1st Round and NL "C" beats NL "D"
and those winners then meet each other, so ensuring a NL team in 3rd Round

not quite the case this year as Eastleigh beat Crewe in 1st Round

In this season's 2nd round, most NL sides got drawn away. Which didn't help.

Excellent work
Is it possible to add 50-1 (when I think present system was adopted with expansion to 92) and 58-9?

Thanks Nico!

Have you got 4th round appearances in the 70s - Tooting and Mitcham U was 75/6?

You can see the series of 3s in the 80s that had stuck in my mind as being a typical tally. Very often Maidstone playing Exeter along the way.

Seventies 4th Round appearances edited in - see above. The mid to late '70s was a fabulous time for Non-Lge clubs!

And I'll get round to the Fifties eventually, John.

It would be worth seeing who the clubs are, given that many of the recent 'NL' clubs have long FL experience. A third round that included, say, Grimsby, Lincoln, Luton and Tranmere wouldn't be of as much note as one with four clubs from Step 2 and below.

Has there been a year when none of the NL clubs were from Step 1?

Since the Alliance Premier League was formed in 1979 the APL/Conference/National has always had at least 1 member club in the FA Cup 3rd Round.

Lowest ranked teams to reach the 3rd Round Proper seem to be...

73/74 Alvechurch ~ West Midlands (Regional) League, Premier Division = Level 7 {below SL-PD & SL-D1N}
------ 1979 APL {Step 1 / Level 5} formed
79/80 Chesham United ~ Isthmian League, Division One = Level 7 {below APL & IL-PD}
89/90 Whitley Bay ~ Northern Premier League, Division One = Level 7 {below Conf. & NPL-PD}
------ 2004 Conf. N & S {Step 2 / Level 6} formed
04/05 Yeading ~ Isthmian League, Premier Division = Level 7
07/08 Chasetown ~ Southern League, Division One Midlands = Level 8
08/09 Eastwood Town ~ Northern Premier League, Premier Division = Level 7
12/13 Hastings United ~ Isthmian League, Premier Division = Level 7
14/15 Blyth Spartans ~ Northern Premier League, Premier Division = Level 7
16/17 Stourbridge ~ Northern Premier League, Premier Division = Level 7

You're a star, Nico.

While you're at it...Angelic...how far back before 1979-80 do you have to go to find a year when none of the NL clubs in the 3rd round were from the 'top' rank? I know that's a bit trickier. You'd probably have to stop at 68-69, the first season of the NPL.

Well, all the clubs were in their particular League's 'top' division. However, in 64/65 http://fchd.info/BARNET.HTM were Athenian Lge champions ...so Level 6 behind the Isthmian Lge's single division, or Level 7 behind the Southern Lge's two divisions... depending on your point of view!

Thanks again.

Hard to think of Barnet as a 'lesser' NL club back then. Comparing the IL and AL tables is interesting: only two of the 20 IL clubs no longer exist (three if you exclude Enfield) but half the AL's 16 have gone or been merged. Average out the survivors current positions and you get around 7 for both.

I'm not sure how you could include Enfield. While Barnet were Athenian League, the top six of the AL was comfortably better than the bottom six of the IL
