Bit too early, but does anyone know where Marquis Rangers, of the Worthing & Horsham League, will play their 2nd round tie against Lambeth All Stars? And where are they based?

Thanks for anyone, who has this info, tried looking, but didn't come up with anything.

Can anyone help with any of the 90 minute scores in these matches that went to extra time?

First Round
Sunday 21st October 2012
17 Pineapple (Liverpool) v Poulton Royal (Cheshire) South Liverpool (Jericho Lane) 1-1 AET (?-?) 6-7 pen's

HT 0-0, FT 1-1

Can you remember who you were, before they told you who you should be?

Re: [John Treleven] FA Sunday Cup - 2nd Round Draw [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Trawling through the internet trying to find the missing 90 minute scores turned up a few interesting stories -

Wymeswold 3, Pattesons 2 AET (2-2)
Pateesons led 2-0 before Wymeswold pulled one back with 20 minutes to go and then equalised with a 90th minute penalty

Eden Vale 5, St. Sebastian's 7 AET (5-5)
St. Sebastian's led 5-0, remarkably they managed to eventually win after being pegged back

Donsville 4, Belstone 4 AET (3-3) 3-5 pen's
Score initially reported as 3-5 on a couple of sites but F.A. has 3-3 AET 3-5 pen's
But Donsville report gives their 90th minute equaliser to make it 3-3 and their 120th minute equaliser to make it 4-4 only to lose the shoot out

Also note
Bilsthorpe Celtic 4, Premier Sports Travel 1 was AET (1-1), F.A. do not note the AET

Why is there so little interest in this competition? Very few clubs enter.

How does that tie in to the lack of interest? (just asking, not arguing!) Could it be down to the "stigma" that is sometimes attached to Sunday football? (even though most of the players in the FA Sunday Cup also play for step 4-6 Saturday teams)

I used to be secretary of a good Sunday League side, mainly made up of Saturday step 5 and 6 players. We considered playing in the FA Sunday Cup but decided against it because of cost and the fact the travelling distances can get silly (for Sunday football) very early on in the competition.

Which is probably a factor in why it is stronger in the north than the south because having established a good base of clubs participating in the north the travelling factor is not so great early on. Until there is a surge of southern entries that will remain a problem. A chicken and egg ssituation. The teams that enter from Plymouth/Exeter very soon have to play in Bristol and then beyond.

Good point. Finances and travelling distances are big issues - esp for clubs in the south east. It is not like in the north where being away to a club 10-15 miles way is no big deal. e.g. if you are a team based in north London, being drawn away to a team in south London might mean driving for 1 to 1.5 hours and getting stuck in traffic on the M25 (or even worse a combined train, tube and bus journey lasting even longer).

I also used to be Secretary of a Sunday side St Anselms (Southall) but as the FA Sunday Cup is for teams in the Premier Divisions of their League it never came up with our club Wink

Is this the same St Anselms that once got to the final of the London Sunday Intermediate Cup?

I think you are getting confused with the St. Anselms from South-West London who played in the Sportsmans Sunday League in the late-90's and most of the 2000's until they folded.

They actually won the London FA Sunday Challenge Cup in 2003/2004, beating my team 2-1 in the First Round thanks to two goals in the last two minutes !
Here's our goal from that game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NyUsTMY_AQ

A fine goal it was too! What Div were Edmonton Rovers in when they were being entered in the Challenge Cup?

We were in the Premier Division of the Waltham Sunday League for three seasons from 2002-2003 onwards.
We finished third, above both Enfield Rangers and Upshire in that first season. They gradually overtook us to become the force (and FA National Sunday Cup entrants) they are now, while we have been stuck in Division One ever since.

Hughesvideo, I cannot believe the ref allowed your team and St Anselm's onto the pitch with both teams wearing such similar coloured shirts and identical coloured socks! Wink

I used to be secretary of a good Sunday League side, mainly made up of Saturday step 5 and 6 players. We considered playing in the FA Sunday Cup but decided against it because of cost and the fact the travelling distances can get silly (for Sunday football) very early on in the competition.

Our side had a few Sandhurst players in it Barry, as well as couple from Ash and Camberley. Plenty good enough for the Camberley Sunday League Premier Division. Trying to get the buggers to travel further than Guildford for a county cup game was a nightmare though. Even league games at Spelthorne often meant a scratch squad, especially as they were 10.30am kick offs. Happy days.

Why is there so little interest in this competition? Very few clubs enter.

A very interesting question and one that I have asked many times over the years!

The sad truth is that the Sunday Cup has never been that popular a competition! In fact, the last few years have been a 'golden age' in terms of the number of entrants accepted.

Historically, the number of entrants has remained at approximately 100 per season (this is mentioned on the FA's website and the research I have done would support that). However, in the five seasons from 1999/00 to 2003/04, the numbers worringly dropped below the three figure mark and varied from 87 to 96.

I'm glad to say that things soon picked up, as the number of entrants shot up to 115 (2004/05) 132 (2005/06), 135 (2006/07) and peaked at a record 149 the season after. Four of the five seasons since have seen the number of entrants exceed the 130 mark, so you could say that interest in the Sunday Cup has never been as high as it has been in the last 6 years.

I think the costs involved is a key point but it's not the only factor. The turn over of Sunday football teams is much higher than it is on a Saturday. Teams come and go very quickly and the competition has a big problem in retaining its new entrants.

Sunday football would appear to be very popular in certain areas as well. Everyone knows the strength of the Liverpool teams and the North East teams. Both regions have enjoyed enormous success and their teams support the Sunday Cup in terms of numbers (25 teams from Liverpool/Cheshire and 17 teams from Durham/North Riding/Northumberland). Conversely, the Cumbrian based sides tend to be few in number and suffer heavy defeats in the early rounds (all three Cumbrian sides lost their opening games - FC Labour 6-0 in the Preliminary round and Club Victoria lost 9-0 in the first round).

There can't be many sides who enter the Sunday Cup for the first time, receive a home draw, get hammered (both FC Labour and Club Vic were at home) and decide to come back for more! You can't blame them for not re-entering can you?

The FA could increase the funding too. The cost of hiring grounds and paying for travel is a big issue for many Sunday teams (whose players already have to pay to play).

Do the FA ever "invite" Sunday county cup winners to take part? I think it would raise the prestige of the competition if all county cup winners took part. A lot of elite Sunday teams do not enter. e.g. Ockendon Motor Spares of Essex who have won the Essex Sunday Premier Cup 7 times in the last 14 years (even then they were losing finalists twice, and one of the finals they did not win was won by their former reserve team!). They have also won the Thurrock Association Sunday League 7 times in the past 8 seasons (with the title they did not win in the 8th season being won by their former reserve team too!).

Right now, the Sunday Cup is really a glorified county cup for teams from Liverpool and Durham who provide the majority of entrants.
