Sorry if this has been reported elsewhere, but was anyone else aware of this law change? Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play: If the ball enters the goal: * if a dropped ball is kicked directly into the opponents’ goal, a goal kick is awarded * if a dropped ball is kicked directly into the teams’ own goal, a corner kick is awarded to the opposing team

an even better one (probably stated elsewhere)- the tape on the players socks must be the same colour as the socks- have seen it twice where the lino has told a player that his tape must be changed!!!

The colour of tape matching socks was mentioned on one of the Sky games last sunday. What happens when there are hooped socks or like Ringmer today who had Blue socks but with a pattern on them. Do they have to get the relevant multi-coloured tape. Probably not. Another stupid rule.

Why bother with tape colour when players are allowed to wear all sorts of stupid-coloured boots?

Would have been better to just make all drop balls contested and none of this "back to you" nonsense.

Instead of worrying about tape on socks why don't the FA or whoever make clubs wear shirt numbers you can actually read from 10 yards away??

There used to be a rule that teams in stripes had to have a solid panel on the back on which numbers could be clearly seen. However, having seen a handful of West Brom games last season that seems to have gone out of the window.

what happened to the proposal that when awarding a penalty kick you did away with the booking/sending off so as not to punish the offending team twice?

However, having seen a handful of West Brom games last season that seems to have gone out of the window. More likely it's alive and well but clubs continue to ignore the rules and do what they like. Mostly everyone involved just gets on with it and sooner or later they'll get told to sort it out. Black kits is our problem - show how much some clubs read the handbook (not).

Therefore, what stops the player from taking a touch and then whacking it into the back of the net at an uncontested drop ball?

Absolutely nothing - and that is exactly what happened in a UCL match at King's Lynn last year. Referees of my acquaintance are bemused by this law change. It achieves nothing.
