Blantyre Celtic v Blantyre Rangers, March 10 2012 Can't Post or Reply Privately

This Saturday's North and South Lanarkshire Amateur League clash between these two teams has created a minor stooshie.

Strathclyde Police have insisted that the game be played behind closed doors at Cambuslang Rangers' Somervell Park ground with a 2pm Kick Off.

Originally the police had said the game could go ahead in Blantyre as usual, with fans, but only with an 8am kick off. The clubs protested, so the police have come up with the new arrangement.

Would an 8am kick off have represented some sort of record? What's the earliest actual kick off anyone can recall?

No previous - Blantyre Celtic are only recently re-formed as amateurs. However, given that many on the green side have their grave-dancing shoes on 24/7 these days, the potential for public disorder is considerable.

0010, I think it was, at Barcelona (opposition refused a request to move to the previous night).

I have been to 0830's in Switzerland and Malta.

"Officials from the clubs say the match should be about bringing the town of Blantyre together, not ripping it apart.
Rangers club secretary Neil Balneaves said: “Both clubs regularly play in front of family and friends – 50 to 60 people.
“The police insisted on a meeting with us. A chief inspector and an inspector warned us about potential problems and asked how we intended to segregate the crowd.
“We said there would be no need since the players and supporters of each club know each other and are friends. But that cut no ice at all. It’s crazy.
“The police pointed out the hassle surrounding the real Old Firm last season and the ‘ongoing problems’ at Rangers, which we are struggling to connect to a football match in Blantyre.
“We know the Blantyre Celtic boys, they know us, we work and socialise together.
“Blantyre is by no means perfect but the people here are quite grown up and we are talking about two tiny clubs.
“When the police started talking about segregation of fans, we all shook our heads in dismay, because both clubs are about bringing the community together, not keeping it apart.”"

The match was switched for the 4th time as police had fears over access to a bar at Cambuslang Rangers ground apparently.

Was eventually played at Ravenscraig in Motherwell with no trouble whatsoever. Celtic winning 1-0 thanks to a second half penalty.

Ridiculous decision from Strathclyde's finest in the first place.

Sounds massively OTT, frankly.

Did the police have to formulate some kind of justification (i.e. to prove it was likely to lead to public disorder; get a court order; etc.)... or did they have powers to order it moved whatever?

Can-of-worms if they've carte-blanche to ban spectators, order neutral venues, etc.
