A good pub, one that does not have a mass of smokers bloking the door. Does not smell of cooking fat. Does not have TV's in the toilets. Does not allow under tens to treat it as a play ground. One where your feet do not stick to the carpet. Where toilets don't smell like sheep are kept in them. Toilets that have soap and flushing toilets. If open plan no Juke Box or loud pipped music. Staff that are polite and don't hide when they have customers. Staff that are not weighed down by piercings.

Going back to that bar in the afterlife, in his song Erwan, Meic Stevens, singing in Welsh about the death of an old Breton friend and referencing Irish mythology, uses the line 'The bar in Tír na nÓg is where you are drinking now'.

A lovely thought, but one bar I hope not to experience anytime too soon!

Re: [AndrewG] what makes a good pub ? [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

On my recent weekend in Wolverhampton, all five pubs visited were selling simple cheese and onion cobs. Cheap, tasty and filling grub for about £1 a time. I can't remember many (if any) pubs down south selling this type of food for many years. All too often these days, too many pubs serving food are pretending to be restaurants (and pricing food to reflect as such). Even bags of crisps are likely to be some poxy expensive gourmet brand.

I like a good duke-box IF it is a proper duke-box with records or CDs in it. I'm definitely NOT a fan of these internet-connected contraptions that boast of access to millions of tracks - you only need some idiot with poor taste to type in two-hours worth of U2 to decimate the atmosphere. With a self-contained duke-box full of proper records, the staff and landlord/landlady can pick and choose the records which can contribute to the pub's personality. The last time I saw a proper decent duke-box containing a quality music choice was The Rat & Ratchet in Huddersfield.

Rant over.

I don't think the Rat & Ratchet free-house in Huddersfield has any historic link with the Rat & Parrol chain. From what I can find out, the Rat & Ratchet was called The Grey Horse back in 1987 and has a long history as a free-house. The Rat part of the name comes from the Rat Brewery which resides in the pub cellar.

As for the Rat & Parrot chain, I found this article...

http://www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/...at-Parrot-pub-closes

...that says the chain died out on 25th February 2011, when its last pub closed in Crawley (though the line that says: "The pub has always been a kind of pre-club pub, somewhere for people to go before hitting the nightclubs", makes me question whether it should appear in a thread titled 'What Makes A Good Pub'!)

The same spokesman notes that the place had been packed for the previous week's televised Crawley match. For the curious, this would have been Crawley Town's 0-1 defeat to Man United at Old Trafford in the 5th round of the FA Cup on 19th February 2011.
