Well, this one was supposed to be a double. However, on arriving at the second leg of the double after an interesting tour of Larnaca, we got to Anorthosis Famagusta's ground 18 minutes before the scheduled 18.00 kick off only to be informed that the game was being played behind closed doors because of crowd trouble at the Famagusta v AEK game previously.

Luckily, with a 2.30 kick off we'd managed:

Anganessi Deryneia 1-1 ARIS, Cypriot 2.league, Anganessi Stadium
Admission 10 Euros, attendance 184 (hc)

A 70 minute car drive from Larnaca took us to Deryneia, on the Eastern coast of Cyprus, with the main local tourist attraction being the view point of Famagusta beach. We shunned this to get a couple of drinks in a local pub, before making our way a mile or so out of town towards this stadium. The ground essentially had one side of uncovered seating that holds a total of 4,000 and is decked out in the clubs colours.

The game was played in a gale force wind and periodic heavy showers, with the visitors having this to their advantage in the first half. They used this to good effect too, restricing the hosts to the odd long range effort. They eventually got the breakthrough on 31 minutes, taking advantage of a hash of a defensive clearence to slot home from close range. They looked good value for this even against the wind in the second half, until the goalkeeper failed to come for a corner on 61 minutes, and it was nodded into the net for the equaliser. Thereafter Anganessi dominated without really looking likely to get the breakthrough, although the visitors can probably rightly feel incensed to have been denied a late penalty.

Interesting first foray into Cypriot football, though more than a little disheartened that the game of choice was only available on television (Alki beat them 2-1)

Armthorpe MW 3 Brighouse T 2
NCEL Prem Adm 5 Prog 1 Att 56

Although only half an hours drive from home, there was scarcely any evidence of snow whatsoever. This was a typical full blooded NCEL match with both sides taking it in turns to be on top. The venerable Leo Fotune-West put the home side in front but when Brighouse equalised early in the second half I thought that they would go on to win but Armthorpes more direct approach suited the conditions and despite a late scare they held on.

The world (well the Worksop and Mansfield part of it) was put to rights by Mr Ianmidloth of this parish during the course of the afternoon, and in The Wheatsheaf beforehand.
Oh, you didn't tell me it was called the Wheatsheaf Wink
Excellent game and a great effort to get it played too. Well done to both teams.

This was top v second at Homers Heath and Bucklands young guns won it. Upton Athletic for years have been top dogs in the South Devon area but i think this game showed some are coming to there last few seasons time for some young lads to be given a chance.

At the above match, and as Mick said, Upton have been the team to beat in recent years, but their players just didn't seem to be up to their standard of previous years. By the looks of them they spend too much time in the pub than on the training pitch, especially one-time Argyle player & Derby County target, Darren Bastow, who threw a career in the league away so he could hang round town with his mates....

Stevenage FC - Hertfordshire's finest!
Buckland Athletic- Pride of South Devon!

Sporting Ribarroja CF v Ribarroja CF B (1-1)
Comunitat Valenciana 1a Regional Grupo 3
Entry free
Prog none
Crowd 122 h/c
A feisty derby with a red card apiece. The guests led through a penalty with the hosts scrambling an equaliser near the end. The tortilla sandwich and coffee was first rate from the cafe. The ground has one stand with about 2,000 seats.

UD Paterna v Mislata UF (2-0)
Same division as above
Entry free
Prog none
Crowd 109 h/c
A dull game played st a ground with a large terrace behind one goal. A forgettable evening became memorable when a home fan punched an away player in the face as he walked to the dressing rooms. All he'll broke loose and there was a full on brawl involving fans and away team getting stuck into each other. Pretty nasty stuff to be honest, and the police turned up as we left.

First ground I can recall going to which had a wine list in the clubhouse.Smile And for those carnivores amongst us the hot dogs although hard to find looked deliciously meaty.

James, you'll be pleased to know that this week's Oxford Times has printed a lovely picture of the new stand at Thame United FC, with yourself and TheWav clearly visible at the front of the queue for the food! Unmistakable! Tongue

Cherry Red Books Middlesex County Football League

Premier Division
Springfield 2 Sporting Hackney 2
Fredrick Knight Sports Ground
Willoughby Lane
Admission Free
Programme 1

An easy jouney here from where I live in Essex and decided to leave the car at home to travel here by one bus and two trains. Northumberland Park National Rail Station is about 5-10 minutes walk from this venue. Turn left out of the station exit and then first right, the ground is just up this road (Willoughby Lane) on your right. Apart from relatives of the players and club officials, the only nuetrals in attendance were a hopper from Hertfordshire, Bethnal Green Andy and his wife as well as myself. Had to ask around for a programme, which I didn't get till half time.
A draw was a fair result and the second Springfield goal was the best of the match.
As well as the train station being nearby, a bus terminus is also located opposite where you exit Northumberland Park Station. The only downpoint about using the train to come here is the hourly service back to Stratford, which leaves at fifty one minutes past the hour. This makes it very awkward if any long periods of injury time occur to catch this train (unless you're either very patient or a fast runner).

A video clip of the second Springfield goal and the referee taking a tumble have been uploaded onto You Tube at:
