Champions League or Reply Privately
Liverpool have been involved in matches that ended up with rule changes to the Champions League. Winning in 2005 and finishing outside the qualifying places resulted in a rule change by UEFA so that winners qualify for the follow seasons competition if the league position is below normal entry level.

The question is which other match involving Liverpool resulted in a change to the competition and what was the change?

Does this include European Cup games as well as post 1992? If so, does the UEFA ban on English clubs count as a change of rules or competition?

Edit: more to the point, was it the Heysel game against Juventus in 1985 and was the change the removal of English clubs from European competition for five years?

It includes the Champions League/European Cup, in all it's forms, from the very start and no not Heysel.

no member association can have more than 4 qualifiers regardless of where the winners finish in their national league.

Before Liverpool won in 2005 there'd been no precedent set

I don't know the precise answer, but I expect it's something to do with Liverpool's first appearance in the European Cup in 1964-65.

In the quarter finals they had two 0-0 draws with 1. Köln. They then played a third game which was also a draw, and after that the two teams tossed a coin to decide who went through.

Was it after this that third games were scrapped, and the away goals rule was introduced? It wouldn't have helped in the particular instance, but there were two other ties in that year's European Cup which were decided on coin tosses after three games - when the away goals rule would have produced a winner after two games.

Liverpool were also involved in a reply in 1966-67 against Petrolul Ploiesti in the 1st round. I think replays, or play-offs as they were called, ended around 1968-69, so your answer isn't correct.

Was it perhaps to do with their 1st round defeat to Forest in 1978-79? Was association protection introduced?

A goal worthy of Trevor Francis's cup final winner itself. Well done. Yes indeedy national association protection was introduced the following season for 1st round ties after Forest & Liverpool were drawn together. Teams from the same national association could still be drawn together in the 2nd round onwards, Verona played Juventus in the 2nd round in 85-86
