Gary Lineker confirmed when World Cup history began when he said that there had been more penalties in the group stage this year than at any time "since records began in 1966".

Surely "since records began" depends on what sort of records you're referring to?

Do people know how much ground players covered during the 1966 World Cup Final?

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

rsssf.com records four penalties in the group stage in 1930 - only one scored!Oddly all in group A
There were no penalties in the group stage in 1934, (but then, there was no group stage)

The ITV commenter said yesterday that 17% of all goals were scored in last 15 mins of games as though this was regarded as a lot.

Well 17% is about one sixth and a quarter of an hour of a game is about a sixth, so I would have thought the statistic was about right and nothing out of the ordinary.

From my experience, it is out of the ordinary - one expects more

I do keep a check on this, and in the last five years my % in last 15 minutes is

2013-14: 20.4%
2014-15: 22.0%
2015-16: 24.9%
2016-17: 22.9%
2017-18: 23.8%

You can prove anything with statistics to suit whatever argument you are trying to make. You could say that from the games played up to and including 21st June 100% of goals have been scored during 90 minutes plus added on time of play. I'm not one for using statistics in games, football is played over 90 minutes on grass (real or otherwise) and not on a piece of paper covered in statistics.

Opps, Mr Lineker. Yes, the 1954 World Cup did go 26 games, (the full tournament) without a scoreless draw - but no it was not entirely a knock out competition

What constitutes the last 15 minutes in your stats? Do your stats refer to the period from 30 minutes after the kick off for the second half? In which case with added time the period covered is more than one-sixth of the match, or do you stop your watch everytime that you think that the referee has stopped his?

So today, nice man Gary informs us that John Stones was the first player from Manchester City to score at the world cup since Trevor Francis against Kuwait.
Obviously Aguero's goal only last week didn't count......Crazy

I'm sure there have been others - perhaps he meant "for England" but we can only guess....

Oh, happy days. I was in Palermo for that one and the Eqypt game, both bloody awful, not that we cared a jot. Our first WC qualification and we got to the quarters without winning a match.
Nearly made it this time, just the five goals short in the play-off with Denmark Crazy

Commentating in the Iran v Portugal game, Mark Lawrenson manages to surpass himself by saying “his arm wasn’t in an unnatural position, it was still joined to his body”!

Possibly the worst match commentary I've ever heard on 5Live, with the Denmark v France match today. I appreciate that it was far from entertaining on the pitch, but Conor McNamara (with a little help from Dion Dublin) milked this (un)comic thread for all it was worth, like a sub-standard Test Match Special.

Peter Jones and Jimmy Armfield must be turning in their graves.

I'm sure the commentator said that Argentina hadn't lost a World Cup Finals match after leading at half time since 1935!

Conor McNamara again, this time while commentating on Japan v. Poland. He somehow compared it to West Germany v Austria in 1982, saying that those two played out a 0-0 draw beneficial to both sides. No, Conor - West Germany won it 1-0.

At this rate, I'm gonna start tuning into TalkSport...

Didn't Glenn Hoddle say using discipline to separate teams with equal records should be replaced with goals and entertaining football. Sorry Glenn we already have goal difference and goals scored and they were equal.

He really is a gimp and actually makes Conor McNamara look competent.

Glenn is also a medical expert. When a player received a light blow to the head, he informed us it was 'just above the brain'.

But outdoing Glenn in the numpty stakes was the ever moronic Phil Neville, who said just before the second half began that Belgium would not try to win the game. Five minutes later they scored. Why do they pay thousands to hire these brain dead idiots, when you would get much more informed and intelligent comments from journalists, and they would probably be cheaper.

I had to smile the other morning trying not to listen to carefully to Robbie Savage on the radio when a chap rang in and asked him what he thought about overpaid ex footballers being allowed to spout rubbish on radio and TV. I presume he hadn't got a clue who Savage was.

There are some truly dreadful 'experts' out there but 'at this moment in time' Hoddle is the worst by a country mile.
