Chelsea Transfer Target

Team(s): Not any more
A shame. After fire destroyed the grandstand, Cleveland Park became a bit of a dump during the last decade of its life. The racing was always first class, though. Crowds were never good, however, and averaged just 850 during the last season (1996). The promoter, Malcolm Wright, told me he lost £1,500 every home meeting. "I've had to come down a model on the Jag," he observed, with a smile. I suspect Malcolm was relieved when the college announced plans to close the stadium and redevelop the site. It gave him a way out without losing face. Not that anyone had serious cause to criticise him: his financial input kept Middlesbrough Speedway going for at least three seasons leading up to Cleveland Park's final fixture, against Bradford Dukes, in October 1996.
