Knock Out Cup - 2nd Leg
Redcar Bears 44 Peterborough 46
Admission 16
Programme 2

One thing about this venue is I didn't expect it to be so close to Middlesbrough or the Riverside stadium. It is located in an industrial area so there is nothing in the locality of interest.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council built the South Tees Motor Sport Park. As you discovered, it's much nearer Middlesbrough than Redcar but the speedway club, aware of who had provided the facilities, chose to be known as Redcar Bears rather than Middlesbrough Bears. Middlesbrough Bears packed up at the end of the 1996 season when Cleveland Park, a dog track at Newport, was redeveloped by its owners, the neighbouring Macmillan College (now Academy). Unsurprisingly, both at the time and since, Middlesbrough Borough Council was prepared to do sweet FA to rehouse the greyhounds and the speedway. Bent over backwards for bloody Middlesbrough FC, mind.
