Sat Aug 6th - Elite League : Lakeside Hammers 42 Coventry Bees 48. Admission 16; Programme 2.50. Att - TBBM said around 1,600

A rare Saturday meeting at Arena Essex gave an easy double after the earlier game at Takeley. We even had time to be refused admission to the Traitors Gate in Little Thurrock on the grounds that dwarfdwarf was just too small to gain entry (probably a good thing judging by the crew assembled out the front) so instead a GBG double in Grays at the White Hart and The Theobold Arms, situated about 5 mins walk from the station and on opposite sides of the road by Grays Wharf. 4 ales in each with the former very lively. I'm sure the stats of TOWIE were there, if only I could be bothered to watch it, but I wouldn't have wanted an argument with any of the females I saw in there.

Arena Essex occupies a big area just off M25 J30 but will win no prizes for aesthetic beauty. One large covered terrace on the near side and a couple of Takeley covers on the far side up against the perimeter fence comprise the cover, unless you count the balcony on the cafe/pub by the first bend which looked well populated. Having said that, it's well banked all round with good viewing from most areas, although you're some distance from the track as it's inside a banger-racing circuit.

Cracking meeting with both teams chasing the 4th and last play-off spot for the end of season Sky hype-fest. After Heat 5, Lakeside were 19-11 up and failed to gain another heat advantage all night as maximum man Eddie Kennett proved unstoppable. A brief delay for a squall after heat 7 - after that it was all Coventry and they should have taken all 4 points but for Rossiter not giving Pawlicki a run out in Heat 15 when he had scored 12 already and Sayfutdinov only 4+2. Sayfutdinov came last in that heat on a track that was much too tight for him.
