Which town has had two league teams? Can't Post or Reply Privately

Note that's Town, not City or bigger urban conglomerate.

Has there been one that has had TWO teams in the Football League at the SAME TIME??

OK this SHOULD be pretty simple - Burton-upon-Trent.

I think Stoke on Trent had two teams in the league before it became a city. Stoke City were once just called Stoke FC.
Perhaps someone from this area could confirm or disprove this.

Peel Croft, the home of Burton Swifts and then of Burton United after the merger with Wanderers.

It is now the home of Burton RFC

I may be wide of the mark here, but there may be a loophole in your otherwise understandable logic - The City of Stoke-upon-Trent was formed, and became a City, in the 20s (I think), BUT before it became a city, it was actually 6 or 7 seperate towns (albeit in close proximity to each other). Therefore before its City Status was granted it could be argued that Stoke played in the town of Stoke-on-Trent and Port Vale played in the seperate town of Burslem.

As I say, havent checked it, so may be wrong.

If I am - then the original question was missing some research as there would actually be two answers.

Bristol Rovers "move" to Cheltenham has fallen through, they are going to stay at the Memorial ground for another year, funding shortfall.

There is one in Scotland..................

But that's not the football league you're looking at.

Northwood, Threave Rovers, Arsenal, Watford, Rochdale, Rangers (the real ones, NOT qpr), queen of the south and a few others.

And I'm guessing it's not that one club from another town has moved in temporarily, like Brighton @ Gillingham, Chester City @ Macclesfield and the future Bristol Rovers @ Cheltenham.

Maybe Birkenhead in the distant past?????

Yes.

And Govan. The Burgh of Govan did not become part of Glasgow until 1912. Both Rangers and Linthouse played there.

Accrington also had 2 league teams.

The original Accrington, one of the original 12, then they folded and were eventually replaced by Accrington Stanley in the league - a totally different club Wink

Accrington has had 3 - the current Stanley are a completely different club from the old one, but the original point of this question was asking about clubs in the league at the same time.

Does New Brighton & Tranmere count ?

I APOLOGISE UNRESERVEDLY TO EACH AND EVERY PERSON ON THIS FORUM WHO HAS FELT LET-DOWN BY MY INIMICABLE AND DEPLORABLE BEHAVIOUR OF OCTOBER 28th. 2009. ESPECIALLY TO BRIAN, WHO IS A MARVELLOUS GENTLEMAN AND IS THE LAST PERSON HERE WHO SHOULD HAVE TO PUT UP WITH SUCH UNDESERVED PERSONAL CHARACTER-ASSASSINATION. LET IT BE KNOWN THAT A PRIVATE PERSONAL APOLOGY WAS SENT, BUT WAS SEEN INSUFFICIENT. FAIR ENOUGH.

I'm confused...

New Brigthton is part of Wallasey

Tranmere is part of Birkenhead

Wallasey and Birkenhead are two seperate towns

As the dates show the two clubs were in the league at different times, so wouldn't count.

Cool
Is/Was Middlesbrough ever classed as a town. I'm sure there was briefly a team called Middlesbrough Ironopolis in the League in the 1890's. Then, of course, Middlesbrough came along.

Although it wasn't at the same time.Mad

Middlesbrough is a town and there was indeed a team called Middlesbrough Ironopolis. The Nops joined the Football League in 1893-94 after three consecutive Northern League titles, but folded at the season's conclusion. Middlesbrough FC had been in the Northern League alongside Ironopolis and remained there until the entered the Football League in 1899-1900.
