Bury gone, Bolton on the brink, others? Can't Post or Reply Privately

Colin Murray suggested on the radio recently he could think of at least 1 other club struggling but couldn't name them for legal reasons?

Who else is struggling?

I only really know the score down in the West Country, Rovers and Exeter are ok I think, Plymouth are too with new stand work, Swindon I presume so after years of trouble.

The vast majority of EFL clubs are run on unsustainable loss making financial models (see @priceoffootball), of those about 30 have structural fault lines that will come home to roost one day, of those the following are closer to administration than is thought: Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, Derby, Reading, Hull, Fleetwood, Ipswich, Coventry, Gillingham, Carlisle, Grimsby, Macclesfield and my bet for next cliff edge crises: Mansfield Town.

When its not Leeds United (season ticket holder) its football across the spectrum or close to KT5.

Stoke are the most obvious one to me, following Bolton's road to misery almost step for step for so far.

It's about time a salary cap was introduced. Why should sportsmen be paid far more than the rest of us? I remember once many years go, I was watching a county cricket match on TV and my father asked me how the players managed to get the time off work. It hadn't occurred to him that a sport like cricket (with crowds mostly in the hundreds) could somehow find the money to employ players on a full-time basis.

I’m not sure why one industry should have a salary cap, compared with another. It’s free markets.

No one caps the bankers, lawyers, accountants salaries, why should it apply to footballers?

Also, if we cap salaries in the U.K., all the best players just go abroad.

You can have a salary cap which is a % of a club's income which would address the real problem which is clubs spending more than they can afford chasing dreams.

As noted, if this results in reduced money available for wages, fewer players will choose England over other countries. That means the standard will drop further behind the Premier League, which is the root of the whole problem.

I don’t think the salary caps would be on individuals, but the total salaries combined. Is that what they do/did in Super League?

If it was linked to income of a club wouldn’t the biggest clubs have the strongest squads as they would be able to offer the biggest salaries and therefore attract the best players?

League-1 and League-2 do cap salaries to a % of income, which has resulted in Bolton and Bury. The EFL need to create a real framework to regulate clubs against building up debts upon debts.

Mentioned on SkySports Sunday Supplement that the team in the most trouble is Oldham Athletic. But there are other clubs in difficulties.

Which reminds me, Bolton Wanderers v Bury was going to be televised by Sky next Sunday. So what will Sky will be showing in the 12 noon slot instead?

HMRC have issued a winding up petition against Southend United. Or as the BBC put it ‘Yet another winding up petition against Southend United....’

Shrimpers are in a perilous state financially with players and staff apparently not paid on time of late....
