Sahar Khodayari was a 29 year old supporter of Iranian side Esteghlal.
In March this year, she attempted to enter the Azadi Stadium in Tehran to watch Esteghlal play. Because women are banned from attending matches in Iran, she entered the ground dressed as a man, but was caught by officials and arrested.
She was summoned to appear in court on 2nd September, and was told she could expect up to six months in prison. Outside the court, Sahar set herself on fire. Last week, she died in hospital of her injuries.
Both Esteghlal and their main rivals, Persepolis, held a minute’s silence in the wake of the news. Esteghlal stated: ”Our dear Sahar burnt herself to death, when she was charged to six months in jail for going to the stadium to support her Esteghlal. She supported us despite the politics made it illegal.”
A fuller article by Marina Hyde appears in today’s Guardian.
